How to repair a leaking water heater

If your water heater is leaking, you need to fix it as soon as possible, below you will find the most common causes of leaks and how to fix them. If you are not confident in your abilities you should seek the help of a qualified person.

Emergency shut down

If water is gushing from either the heater or its associated pipes you must immediately shut off the cold water supply feeding the tank. Before doing this you MUST first switch off the heaters gas or electricity supply.

To switch off the gas supply - locate the flexible gas supply pipe, this can usually be found on the left of the water heater, follow the pipe to the gas shut off valve and turn the lever a ¼ turn.

To switch off the electricity supply - locate the cable supplying the water heater and follow it back until you see a switch or circuit breaker, switch off the electric supply.

To shut off the cold water supply - The cold water feed is usually located at the top of the water heater on the right side, locate the cold water line and follow it away from the heater until you come to a gate valve, turn the valve's handle fully clockwise.

Locating the source of the leak

You may have a pool of water beneath your heater this does not mean you have a leak. A common problem with water heaters is condensation, that can occur when large amounts of cold water fill the tank, for instance after someone has run a bath. Condensation can form on the outside of the heater and run down the outside forming a pool of water. This is particularly noticeable in the winter months when the incoming water is very cold, if the problem disappears in the warmer months then this points to a condensation problem. The only is to cover the water heater with a water tank jacket.
