After the premiere of her film Tiefland in 1954, for decades it was generally thought this would be Riefenstahl's last film. However, a few days before her 100th birthday, saw the release of Impressionen unter Wasser (45 minutes, with an introduction by Riefenstahl) premiered in Berlin 48 years after Tiefland.[1]

Impressionen unter Wasser is the final result of 30 years of underwater cinematography. In 1983 she described her intentions for the eventual film; "Underwater films are either scientific, like Jacques Cousteau's, or sensational, like the Hollywood shark films. But there are none like this one we plan."[2]

Impressionen unter Wasser had its premiere at Delphi am Zoo, Berlin on 14 August 2002, a week before the celebrations for Leni's centenary birthday. It was broadcast the following day on the French/German Arte channel, together with an interview with Riefenstahl and an airing of theoriginal 1932 version of Riefenstahl's Das Blaue Licht. It was also featured at the 2003 Maui Independent Film Festival and the 2004 Oporto International Film Festival (Fantasporto).[3] The film was released on DVD in April 2003.

The marine-based documentary was mainly shot around Papua New Guinea and is a collection of footage directed by Riefenstahl between the 1970s and 2000.[4] Other film locations included Maldive Islands the Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, Indonesia, the Red Sea, the Cocos Islands (Pacific) and the Caribbean Sea (Cuba).[3] Riefenstahl dismissed claims that the film was a comeback; "Impressionen Unterwasser certainly isn't a 'comeback'. I was always active and continue to be so. My film shows the beauty of the underwater world. I hope it will touch the viewer's conscience as it illustrates just what the world will lose when nothing is done to stop the destruction of our oceans. I once said that I am very fascinated by the beautiful and the living. I seek harmony and, under water, I have eventually found it."[5]

The film attracted a mixed response from critics. The Tagesspiegel Daily wrote of the candy-coloured images and Riefenstahl's flowing blonde hair; "It's as if a pop artist on LSD painted it".[7] Time Out magazine held a neutral view point, puzzled by the lack of commentary, as is characteristic of Riefenstahl films but was displeased by the Moroder-Walker score.[8] Other critics compared the film to her famous 1938 film Olympia in that it reflects her ultimate pursuit of beauty.[9] Contributing to the book 501 Directors, Dr. Ernest Mathijs, writer and film scholar cited the documentary as "[a] final example of her creative genius."[10] The cartoon A fish movie is shown (Ein Fischfilm wird gezeigt, 2004) by comic duo Katz & Goldt is set at Delphi cinema in Berlin where the film premiered.[11]

'While amply providing rich and rigorous study of one studio within cinema history, Wasser pulls off the nifty accomplishment of also offering compellingly and comprehensively the overall history of the moving image in modern America, moving deftly between film, along with allied mass media, and the mass audience that, across time, made so much of them.'

The three stories that make up this film show the existential importance of water for humankind. It shows flooded Bangladesh, where houses turn into boats, the steppes of Kazakhstan, where fishing villages suddenly stand in a desert after the shrinking of the Aral Sea, and the densely-populated slums of Nairobi, where drinking water becomes a precious commodity and a question of life and death.

The film was made in collaboration with Swiss director and screenwriter Christian Johannes Koch. Most of the concept and production work was done on an honorary basis, which we cannot give Christian and the whole film crew enough credit for.

The film was shot with Christian and the camera man Sebastian Klatt, in the summer of 2017 in Switzerland and in the Zambian capital Lusaka. The musician and sound designer Alexandre J. Maurer was responsible for the complete soundtrack.

Wasser is a series of five short experimental films about water and its different states, the hydraulic force, the transformation of the flow into energy and the devices of metamorphosis. Wasser is both a musical (soundtrack by Khaki Blazer, Raymonde, Andreas O. Hirsch, The Dead Mauriacs, Richard Pinhas) and a mysterious and inner journey, forming a poetic and powerful visual essay.

Engineered for performance in the harsh environment of marine vessel ballast tanks, MC-BallastCoat has become a recommended topcoat for application on various marine, immersion service or interior surface coating projects. It has the advantage of superior corrosion resistance, hard-film cure, and light coloring pigments for easy surface inspection and maintenance.

For his part, Cosmos team historian David Kilpatrick bristled at the suggestion that most of their film archive had been wiped out. While some of the tapes that the club shipped to California were deemed to be unsalvageable, the bulk of them were successfully digitized, Kilpatrick says.
