Nick Nolte plays Lucas, a newly reformed robber just out of prison who ends up a hostage in a bungled bank robbery by desperate dad Ned (Martin Short). Now the cops are after both of them, and they must work together to get to freedom. This now hard-to-find comedy (recently available on Netflix) was filmed mostly in the Tacoma area of Washington.
The film opens with Lucas being released from the McNeil Island Prison west of Steilacoom in Puget Sound. Prior to its closing in 2011, this was the last remaining operational island prison in the United States.
What is now just the Anderson Island ferry dock in Steilacoom is where Detective Dugan (James Earl Jones) picks up Lucas. This location was also seen in WarGames.
The "Pacific National Bank" is Tacoma's landmark Old City Hall building at 702 Commerce Street.
During the robbery scene, police officers are seen rushing down the "Spanish Steps," built in 1915 next to the old Elks Club building across Commerce Street from the Old City Hall.
As Ned and Lucas escape the police, they pull into an empty pit off of East 14th Street in Los Angeles.
As they watch, a man in a sports car pulls up to an apartment at 2177 East 14th Street and they hijack the car.
The old brick building used for the Tacoma Police Station was located on Wall Street in Los Angeles but has since been razed.
On his way to see Dr. Horvath (Kenneth McMillan), Ned drives down East D Street under the South 11th Street bridge in Tacoma.
Dr. Horvath's place was located across the Thea Foss Waterway to the east of downtown Tacoma. The building no longer stands.
