This 1989 film follows two down-on-their-luck brothers (real-life brothers Beau & Jeff Bridges) who make a living playing piano in Seattle hotel lounges. When they strike upon the idea to add a singer to their group they fall upon Susie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and none of their lives will be the same. The majority of the exterior locations in the film were actually shot in Seattle, with Los Angeles providing many of the hotel interiors.
The film opens with Jack (Jeff Bridges) leaving a woman's 2nd floor apartment above the "Vine Street Captain's Landing," which is now the Black Bottle tavern at 2600 1st Avenue in Seattle. The girl's apartment was on the SW corner, on the Vine St. side. Jack emerges below, and walks south down 1st Ave.
After leaving the girl's apartment, Jack walks across 1st Ave. in front of what is now El Gaucho'srestaurant at 2505 1st Avenue.
Jack is then seen walking SE down the west side of 1st Ave. between University & Seneca. "Seattle Music" at 1210 1st is now a market, "Freedman's Loan" shop at 1208 is a carpet shop, and the "Check Mart" is now a Money Mart.
He then passes by the entrance to the Il Bistro Italian restaurant, under the Pike Place Market at 93 Pike St. He then continues walking through the stalls of the Market itself, on the far west side of Pike St.
Jack is last seen passing Ivar's Fish Bar at Pier 54 on the waterfront at 1001 Alaskan Way.
The apartment where Jack lives (though he spends more time on the roof) was above Masin's Furniture at 220 2nd Avenue South. The apartment was on the top-left of the west side of the building. You can still see the fire escape they crawled out onto.
The exterior of the "Capri Hotel" is now the Hotel Max at 620 Stewart Street in Seattle. It now looks a little different from how it did in the film.
The interior of the "Capri Hotel" was formerly Trader Vic's in the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, which is now the Westin Seattle at 1900 Fifth Avenue.
The unnamed Seattle diner that the Baker boys frequent is at 1052 South Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. It is now a thrift store.
The "Starfire Hotel" entrance was on the SE side of what is now the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, at approx. 452 Seneca Street This is the old historic Olympic Hotel building. From here, Frank (Beau Bridges) walks west down Seneca.
The exterior for "Henry's" - the small jazz club where Jack plays piano is the south end of Post Alley in Pike Place Market, Seattle.
The alley outside Jack's apartment was accurately, the same building his apartment was located in. On the SE corner of the Masin's Furniture building is this alley with view across Main Street. In the film, you can see the Kingdome down the next alley, which has been replaced by Qwest & Safeco Fields. There is also a new building that obstructs the view toward Qwest Field.
Then the gang hops on I-5 south out of Seattle and arrives at a fancy resort hotel. The exterior shots of the hotel were filmed at the Greystone Mansion at 905 Loma Vista Drive in Beverly Hills, CA. This famous mansion is open to the public, and has been used in hundreds of other films including: X-Men, Spider-Man, The Big Lebowski (also with Jeff Bridges), Ghostbusters 2, There Will Be Blood, Indecent Proposal, etc.
The interior ballroom of the resort hotel where Susie sings on top of Jack's piano was the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel at 506 Grand Avenue in Los Angeles, CA. The other interior shots, including the lobby, were also the Biltmore.
The exterior of the hotel where Jack & Susie talk was the NW side of the Roosevelt Hotel in Seattle at 1531 7th Avenue. The shot above looks east up Pine St.
The house where Susie lives was at 1505 East Pine Street in Seattle. This is where the last scene of the film takes place, between her and Jack. However, the house & nearly all surrounding landmarks have been torn down & replaced by newer condo buildings. The final crane shot looks out at the skyline from Pine & 15th at this same location. The opening shot of the film was also shot from here.
