John Russell (George C. Scott) is a music instructor from New York who is grieving the loss of his wife and young daughter. He relocates to Seattle to start over and decides to rent a historic home. Little does he know the terrible secret past this house hides...This film was produced by a Canadian production company, so you guessed it - locations in nearby British Columbia stood in for Washington State.
The opening scene was filmed at Hollyburn Ridge at Cypress Provincial Park north of Vancouver.
In an early scene, John is seen walking across Josie Robertson Plaza from the Metropolitan Opera House in the Lincoln Center, NYC.
We see John walking north on Broadway toward West 78th Street (thanks to John).
He then enters the historic Apthorp Building at 2201-2219 Broadway (thanks to John).
Upon his arrival in Seattle, John is shown in the main terminal of SeaTac International Airport.
Unfortunately, the main location in the film - the haunted house that John stays in - was a facade built by the film crew on top of another building slated for demolition and it was actually destroyed at the end. It was likely shot somewhere in Canada. Interiors were filmed in the late Panorama Studios in West Vancouver.
The cemetery scene was filmed at Lake View Cemetery (where Bruce & Brandon Lee are buried) at 1554 15th Avenue East in Seattle.
John walks toward his new class at the University of Washington, across Red Square toward the Suzzallo Library. Interior classroom shots were supposedly done at the University of Toronto.
John and Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere) go see a symphony at the Orpheum Theatre at 884 Granville Street in Vancouver.
The historical society was the flatiron-shaped Hotel Europe at 43 Powell Street in Vancouver.
John rids himself of his daughter's toy ball on Granville Bridge in Vancouver.
The "Spencer Carmichael Tower" is actually Rainier Tower at 1301 Fifth Avenue in Seattle.
John and Claire have a meeting in a restaurant in the bottom floor of the Hotel Europe.
John exits the east side of the Mt. Baker Tunnel on I-90, heading toward the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge.
The house with the well appears to have been filmed at the end of 29th Street in West Vancouver, though it no longer stands. One thing is for certain, it is not at the location shown on the map in the film!
The mansion where Senator Carmichael lives is Hatley Castle at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC. This was seen more recently in the X-Men films as the mutant school.
