One of two films that chronicle the life of Olympic runner Steve Prefontaine, this one stars Jared Leto and substituted Washington State for Oregon.
College scenes were filmed at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, which doubled for the University of Oregon. The surrounding area was used for various running scenes through town, which was supposed to be Coos Bay.
"Hayward Field" was substituted by Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound.
The railroad bridge that a young Prefontaine jumps from at the start of the film is located on the Snoqualmie River, just west of the intersection of SE Reinig Road and 396th Drive SE in Snoqualmie. This same bridge was also used in Twin Peaks.
Football scenes early in the film take place at Catharine Blaine Elementary School at 2550 34th Avenue West in Magnolia (thanks to Steve).
Bill (Ed O' Neill) watches Pre run at Discovery Park (aka Fort Lawton) on the west side of Seattle.
The "Jones Circle" (bounded by Howarth Hall, Jones Hall & McIntyre Hall) at the end of North 15th Street on the University of Puget Sound campus represented the University of Oregon in most of the college scenes.
This is also where you will find the fountain where Steve is seen puking in the bushes while jogging.
Prefontaine meets Pat (Breckin Meyer), Thomas (Adam Fitzhugh) and Mac (Brian McGovern) on the steps of McIntyre Hall at UPS.
Steve does some training on the northern-most side of Everett's waterfront, just off the west side of West Marine View Drive/Highway 529.
Another track used in the film was West Seattle Stadium at 4432 35th Avenue SW. in Seattle. It has the distinctive old wooden stands where Bill (R. Lee Ermey) and Bill meet with Steve and where he is hounded by the press.
The "Paddock Tavern" in the film was actually the old Buckaroo Tavern at 4201 Fremont Avenue in Seattle. It has recently been replaced by a restaurant.
The airport where Pre is mobbed by the press is King County Airport/Boeing Field at 7277 Perimeter Road South on the south side of Seattle.
The track where Pre practices before the Olympics appears to be the track at Stanwood High School at 7430 276th Street NW in Stanwood, WA.
The race at the Olympic Games was filmed at Husky Stadium at the University of Washington.
The hotel where the Olympic athletes stay was actually McMahon Hall at UW.
