Sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) are modern-day witches, raised by their aunts after their parents' deaths on a remote Massachusetts island. As if fitting in wasn't hard enough, their family carries with it a curse that kills off every man they fall in love with. The majority of the film was shot in Washington, followed by a studio shoot in Los Angeles.
The opening scenes and Maria's cabin were filmed somewhere on San Juan Island.
The Owens house was a facade built by the film crew in San Juan County Park on San Juan Island. It was torn down after filming was completed, and interiors were shot on soundstage sets at Warner Brothers Studios.

The small town of "Maria's Island" was actually historic Coupeville on Whidbey Island (which was repainted entirely in white for the film). This same street was seen earlier in War of the Roses. Sally and her aunts Fran (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest) are shown walking up Front Street toward a farmer's market at NW Grace Street where she first sees Michael (Mark Feuerstein).
Michael is overrun first by a pack of bicyclists, then a truck while making a delivery on Front Street between Grace & Main.
Sally's "Verbena" store was locagted at 4 Front Street NW.
The nighttime scene at the oil refinery was likely shot at the Shell Refinery at March Point near Anacortes.
While on the island, Officer Hallet (Aidan Quinn) stays in the Ursula Building in Coupeville at 13 Front Street.
Sally is shown running home past the end of Front Street (it turns into a trail) north of the wharf in Coupeville.
