The first in the series of Rambo films stars Sylvester Stallone as Vietnam vet John Rambo - a man with a troubled past looking to settle in to the small town of Hope, WA. When the town's Sheriff Teasle (Brian Dennehy) makes it clear he wants Rambo out, it escalates to all-out war. Though set in Washington State, the filmmakers chose to shoot the entire film in and around Hope, British Columbia.
Scott Hardy has put an amazing amount of work into finding each location from the film shot-by-shot. His website, First Blood Filming Locations, has a wealth of photos, maps, and stories about each place and is undoubtedly the most definitive source out there. Herve Attia also produced a video, On the Set of First Blood, in which he visits the locations today and lines them up shot-for-shot.
Here are a couple photos from my recent trip to the area.
The "bridge to Portland" was actually the Coquihalla River Bridge on Kawkawa Lake Road in Hope. Since then, the bridge has been removed and replaced with a newer road bridge.
"Chapman Gorge" was filmed at the Othello tunnels of the former Kettle Valley Railway, located in Coquihalla Canyon. The cliff right after the first tunnel is where Rambo jumps. He lands in a tree to the right after the 2nd tunnel (the tree no longer stands).
