This action thriller came out during a string of disaster films in the late 90s and starred Pierce Brosnan as volcanologist Harry Dalton - who travels to the fictional Dante's Peak in Washington State to investigate the possibility of an eruption. Well, it doesn't take a volcanologist to figure out what happens next...The majority of filming was done on movie studio backlots, though some exteriors were done in Idaho and Washington.
Opening scenes were filmed at Mexican Town Movie Ranch in Saugus, CA.
The town of Dante's Peak was actually filmed in Wallace, Idaho. Establishing shots of the festival look down Bank Street from 6th Street. Obviously, the peak was added digitally to the background.
Harry arrives in town driving down Cedar Street, across 6th Street.
The alley where Harry and Rachel (Linda Hamilton) find her son was located at the end of 7th Street, past Residence Street. This was where the boarded-up mine entrance was that they enter at the end of the film.
Helicopter flyover shots were done at Mount Saint Helens in Washington State. Mount Adams can be seen in the background.
This shot is likely a digital composite of the actors with a background plate shot on the south side of the crater of Mount Saint Helens.
