This film follows Jack McGurn (Dennis Quaid), a former union rights worker living in Los Angeles who falls in love with a young Japanese woman in Little Tokyo. As World War II escalates, Lily (Tamlyn Tomita) and her family must cope with being sent off to an internment camp. The film's story goes from Los Angeles to Seattle, and finally to the internment camp. Much of the film was shot in the Portland, OR area.
The theater fire at the start of the film was shot in the Moreland Theatre at 6712 SE Milwaukie Avenue in Portland.
The Kawamura movie theater where Jack works was the Clinton Street Theater at 2522 SE Clinton Street in Portland, though the exterior appears to have been shot elsewhere.
The Little Tokyo street was filmed on NW 3rd Avenue between NW Everett Street & NW Couch Street in what is now Chinatown in Portland.
The sewing shop where Lily worked in Little Tokyo is now China Town Convenience Store at 213 NW 3rd Avenue in Portland.
Jack and Lily crash a wedding party at the old Elks Club Building at 565 Broadway in Tacoma, WA.
They are seen walking along the Spanish Steps on the south side of the building, also featured in Three Fugitives.
The old cannery building in Cathlamet, WA was the fish cannery where Jack works.
Jack carries Lily down Firemen's Alley - located between South Washington & South Main Streets behind the J&M Cafe at 201 1st Avenue South in Pioneer Square (thanks to Charity).

The steam engine seen in the film was the Southern Pacific #4449, the last remaining of Southern Pacific Railroad's GS-4 steam locomotives. It has recently been moved to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, and occasionally operates on excursion runs. Eight passenger cars were brought down from Vancouver, BC for the shoot.
Before being sent to the internment camp, the Japanese were first put in the horse stables at Portland Meadows Race Track at 901 North Schmeer Road in Portland.
Based on the real-life Manzanar camp in California, the film's internment camp was built from scratch in the desert near Palmdale, CA. 35 acres of land were cleared for the site, which was ultimately destroyed after filming and returned to its natural state.
