Recent WCHS graduates Richard Miller and Kirk Starnes were killed in an automobile accident January 23, 1976. They were heading to Peoria to pick up tuxedos for Miller's wedding, which was to be the next day, and were hit head on at the foot of the hill on Route 8 in East Peoria by a pickup with no headlights driving in the wrong lane.
In June 1976 17-year-old Dirk DeWispeleare was found by police lying on the road between Washington and Sunnyland with injuries. He would pass away in the oncoming days after several surgeries for head trauma. Dirk had just graduated from Spalding Institute the week before.
