Earl Zimmerman had a challenger in his bid for re-election for Mayor in Republican Donald Guedet.  Guedet would supplant Zimmerman as Mayor, garnering 54% of the vote.

A&P signed a lease with George Rinkenberger for the construction of a grocery store on his lumber yard property (formerly the LJ Danforth Lumber Yard) at 300 Peoria Street.

The development of the Oakwood Heights subdivision is announced east of Glendale Cemetery.

The current Central School was first opened for use in 1957.  In its first iteration it only had two classrooms.  The old school at the corner of Wilmor and Newcastle sold for $4,710 to the upstart Grace Bible Church.

The Sunnyland Lettes won the Women's fast-pitch softball state championship.

Palanza's Pizza opened in Sunnyland.

The Kings Kastles Drive-In, a predecessor to Unkle Woody's, opened on Peoria Street.

The Crest View Motel opens and becomes one of the longest surviving businesses in city history.
