1922

The German Lutheran Church was dwindling due to its strict German-speaking stance, and in 1922 the remaining families merged with St. Mark's.  The old church on High Street was sold to General Telephone Company which used it as their home base until 1961.

In late 1922 an organized Ku Klux Klan group was formed in Washington.  It was the third one to form in the county behind Pekin and Delavan.  Washington’s newspaper at the time, the Tazewell County Reporter, was sympathetic to the Klan.

The Washington Mother's Club set off on a mission to create a library for Washington.  They raised $185 by having a bazaar at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and from that a little library cramped into a small room at the City Building was opened in 1927, setting off the chain of events that led to our wonderful library at Five Points Washington today.
