In 1899, the Washington Post, established by B.S. Wright, was purchased by Paul Goddard, who would go on to serve as editor until 1936.

A mysterious and savage insect appeared in Washington in 1899, making statewide news. Dubbed the "Lip Bug," the insect would bite people around the lips and cheeks, leading to swollen faces and shortness of breath.
