In 1844 James Smith, the first carpenter who arrived in the city in 1834 or 1835, passed away.
The Hornish building was constructed at the corner of North Main and Zinser Streets, in the current location of a parking lot and the Holland mural. This large building would stand for over fifty years as a symbol of early Washington.
