Mitski's 'Washing Machine Heart' is a song that combines poetic imagery with a sense of vulnerability and desire. The lyrics suggest a yearning for intimacy and recognition, with the washing machine serving as a central metaphor. The phrase 'Toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart' implies an openness to take on the emotional baggage of another, to cleanse and to bear the brunt of their mess. The heart, like a washing machine, is a vessel for cleaning, but it also endures the 'banging up' that comes with the process, indicating a willingness to endure pain for the sake of love or connection.

The second verse, 'I'm not wearing my usual lipstick, I thought maybe we would kiss tonight,' reveals a sense of anticipation and vulnerability. Mitski is presenting herself in a more natural state, foregoing her usual armor in the hope of a genuine connection. This line also speaks to the idea of altering one's appearance or behavior in the pursuit of affection, a common theme in the dynamics of relationships and attraction. The repetition of 'Baby, will you kiss me already?' underscores the longing and impatience for a desired response.

Washing Machine Heart by Mitski is a fascinating song that explores the complexities of the human mind. Released as part of her fifth studio album, Be the Cowboy, the song features a catchy and upbeat instrumental that is in contrast to the song's dark subject matter. Through this song, Mitski invites listeners to reflect on the inner turmoil that individuals can experience while attempting to control their environments.

At its core, Washing Machine Heart is a song about control. The protagonist of the song is a woman who is struggling to maintain a sense of power in her life. She compensates for her perceived powerlessness by trying to control herself and her environment, but this control is unsustainable and ultimately detrimental to her mental well-being.

The song's lyrics paint a vivid picture of the protagonist's inner turmoil. She is "spinning" out of control and desperately trying to keep herself together. The heavy backbeat that runs throughout the song mirrors the thumping of the protagonist's heart, emphasizing her struggle to maintain control.

Interestingly, Mitski has noted that the protagonist of the song is not a fictional character but rather a part of her own psyche. The song, therefore, can be seen as a reflection of the artist's own struggles with control. She acknowledges that the protagonist's extreme efforts to maintain control are not healthy, and that there is a more vulnerable and human part of herself that she is pushing down in order to appear strong to the world.

In addition to its lyrical depth, Washing Machine Heart is a standout example of Mitski's musical talents. The song features a driving rhythm that is characterized by its heavy drums and pulsing bassline. These elements work together to create a sense of relentless forward momentum, even as the lyrics hint at the protagonist's internal turmoil.

The song's chorus is particularly memorable, with Mitski repeating the line "You're my, you're my, you're my" before launching into the title lyric of "washing machine heart." This repetition of the title, combined with the driving rhythm and infectious melody, makes for a song that is both catchy and emotionally resonant.

One fascinating detail about Washing Machine Heart is the way in which the instrumental mirrors the song's subject matter. As mentioned earlier, the heavy backbeat of the song can be interpreted as representing the clatter of a washing machine. This may be a nod to the way in which the protagonist is metaphorically "spinning" out of control.

Ultimately, Washing Machine Heart is a song that rewards repeated listening. With its catchy hook and driving rhythm, it is a song that can easily get stuck in your head. But beyond the earworm qualities of the song, there is a depth of emotion and meaning that invites listeners to reflect on their own struggles with control and vulnerability.

Washing Machine Heart is a standout track from Mitski's acclaimed album Be the Cowboy. With its catchy melody and driving rhythm, the song is a memorable addition to Mitski's already impressive discography. But beyond its surface-level appeal, the song is a compelling exploration of the human psyche and the dangers of trying to exert too much control over oneself and the world.

The Mashup begins with a view of a old television, where it initially displays static. Soon afterwards, the screen light ups to reveal an 60s-style advertisement of a laundromat, which is owned by Mitski. It features various shots of the laundromat while a male voice is heard, only for it to be distorted as it shows a straight row of washing machines. The screen has a darkened effect while it flashes the main background of the Mashup. The screen quickly turns black, while the sound of a VHS tape being re-inserted back to the console before the music starts. As the music starts, it reveals first the creator's name, as if presenting something, before the screen quickly lights up to reveal the main background of the Mashup.

The Mashup takes place in an old laundromat, where it features brick walls and a checkered floor with pulsing squares that randomly float up before sinking down. Several of the squares in the floor emit blue glow. The walls in the background are grown with lichen, and several aged papers that are placed on the wall. By the left side of the coach is a small wooden compartment, and behind the coaches are several washing machines arranged in a row. Above the washing machine are three hanging lights, along with a long bar of light above the washing machines. Placed on top of the washing machines is a small basket and a white detergent container. Throughout the rest of the Mashup, it shows static noise in the screen.

During the chorus, the camera view zooms in to one of the washing machines, where it soon reveals a circular rotating tunnel in black, where there are several rotating lights in the tunnel, colored cyan and orange. 152ee80cbc
