Crustal fluids and fluxes

About us

Geologic fluids in the subsurface play a critical role for a wide range of anthropogenically relevant sites. They are associated with hydrocarbon generation, migration, storage, and contamination, to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), and groundwater abstraction, through to deeper ancient, quiescent sites being considered as potential nuclear waste repositories and the formation of (un)conventional hydrocarbon, hydrogen, and helium resources. However, our understanding of the fundamental processes at work hinges on having critical constraints on the fluid origin, evolution, interaction and migration.

In the Warr Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory we use a combination of noble gas, stable isotope and novel analytical chemistry tools to constrain sources and sinks of these fluids and understand how their origin, migration, interaction, and evolution relate to these diverse subsurface systems.
