I am parenting a null to the camera and then use a Object CHOP to get the position and rotation from the camera compared to the origin. When rotating or translating the camera the values are being exported right to the camera. Once I stop moving, I run a script that uses the values from the Object CHOPs and writes them via the opparm command into the transform parameters of the null that is parented to the camera. The same script now also resets the values that are being exported to the camera.

what i do is I take the difference from the previous transform and the most recent transform, apply it to the tester Null COMP, calculate the new position with Object CHOPs and write the new position to the camera pre transform null1 COMP.

I'm using TF2_ROS for translations. I have a camera on the end of a mechanical arm on my end effector. I calculate a known distance from that camera and would like to move the end effector into that point that is in the cameras frame of view.

Do I need to make a geometry messge, take the rotation angle from my camera and set them for xyzw, and then set the extra distances to the x y z translation then pass it to tf2? Is tf2 maybe not the correct type of package for this? If so, are there any recommended packages or should I write this myself?

The recommended approach for this would be to add a camera frame to the TF tree. To do this you would use the static transform publisher to describe the position and orientation of the camera relative to the end effector of your robot. To stick to the conventions described here you should use an optical frame convention for a camera.

With that frame added to the TF tree you can use the tf2_ros::BufferInterface::transform method to convert a point (or pose) from the camera frame to the world frame (or any other for that matter) with a single call. This way the TF system does all the hard work for you.

How can I translate the camera without having the problem with the current rotation of the scene? As I'm working with a phone, I always want to move the object to the direction I'm swiping to. When I call translate first, the translation works fine, but the rotation has some errors.

If you define camera base vectors C-center, L-look at, U-up such that C is the camera center, L is the normalized vector from center towards the point you are looking at and U is up normalized. Now you can rotate the L vector left and right by rotating it around U by any angle.

I think you mix the concept of moving the camera and rotating your object. First you need to separate the action of rotating your object from any interaction with the camera. You should be able to do anything with the object without changing the camera at all. To do this just use the model matrix to describe the translation/rotation/scaling of your object. Then you handle your camera separatly by using Matrix.setLookAtM with an eyeX, eyeY, eyeZ that is independent of your model position. And a point to look at that in your case is dependent of the eyeX, eyeY, eyeZ, as you want to be looking at the same direction all the time.

Also remember that all matrix operations after Matrix.setIdentityM will be done in a backwards order, ie if you rotate first and then translate as you do the first thing in your code, you will first translate your object away from its origin position, then rotate around the origin, making your object do a kind of rotation around of the first origin, instead of the center of your object.

My question is about the Film Translate field. Although I believe this field controls the same offsets, what are the units or the scale of the attribute? I cannot fathom the relationship between the translate value and its effect on the camera back or the viewport. It doesn't seem to be inches nor NDC.

However, when rendering with the Maya Software renderer, the camera using Film Translates has only offset half the translation distances! (The render does not match the viewport nor the first camera.)

It seems like the value from calibrated_sensor is based from the location and the facing direction of its ego car.

So, would the translation and rotation of the camera be calculated from the value from calibrated_sensor and ego_pose?

If so, would anyone have any suggestion for how to calculate the values?
