Saturday wintry mix potentialSaturday brings the potential for snow and ice to the region as a low-pressure area forms off the coast of the Carolinas, and relatively warm air rides up and over a dome of cold air.

The first recorded survey of the area was done by Thomas and Andrew Lewis. Thomas Lewis and his son obtained 140 acres of the land, including the warm springs. Andrew Lewis was an early partner of Thomas Bullitt, who procured 300 acres including the hot springs and built the first hotel in 1766 on the site of The Omni Homestead Resort.

This is the ultimate bowl of winter comfort food! Yukon Gold potatoes and green beans are roasted until crisp and golden and then tossed with warm quinoa, shredded kale, green onion, and a speedy roasted garlic and red wine vinaigrette. I topped this cozy bowl with crunchy toasted pepita seeds and creamy sliced avocado. Feel free to swap the potatoes with whatever variety you have on hand (yellow or red potatoes work great in a pinch). Spelt berries or millet might be a nice sub for the quinoa if you feel like changing up the grain.

Made this last night and made my own modifications due to what was available at the store. Sauteed the kale and included shallots (shallots were extra tasty). Roasted Brussels sprouts, broccolini, and sweet potatoes. Use the rest of the ingredients as so and it turned out really good. I may roast some chickpeas and sunflower seeds and add them to the bowl but this to totally hit the spot. Great way to have a warm salad during fall/winter.

Working conditions are much healthier with WMA. Both at the production plant and on the construction site, workers inhale far less smoke and dust. This reduction is particularly important in tunnels, where ventilation is reduced. Comments from workers have been highly positive. According to Brad Neitzke, a Materials Engineer for the Federal Lands Highway, a Division of FHWA, "Certainly, warm-mix improved working conditions at the paving site. The crew's first reaction was to say, "There's no smoke!"

WMA also produces fewer emissions, making it possible for paving to be done on some days when the air quality would typically put a halt to paving. A State transportation official recently attested that "On non-attainment days, when the air quality is bad, we often get shut down and are unable to pave. But with warm-mix [asphalt], because the emissions are reduced, we might be able to pave even on days when the air quality is not the best."

In many regards, December was more like November in Minnesota, with bare ground dominating the landscape across the state for much or all of the month, and temperatures remaining mild virtually every day, with a few bouts of very to extremely warm weather. A rare holiday heat wave arrived with precipitation event that produced rain almost exclusively, and propelled the month to the top of the precipitation charts as well.

Strong El Nio conditions in the Pacific Ocean have kept frigid winter air masses locked up in central and northern Canada, 1,000 to 2,000 miles to our north. Most days have been much warmer than average, and passing cold fronts have struggled to bring in anything other than seasonally-normal air.

The lack of snow cover has boosted temperatures further, because bare ground absorbs sunlight and warms the air above it 10-20 times more effectively than fresh snow. Snow cover during winter is a classical climatic "feedback," because snowy ground keeps temperatures lower, making precipitation more likely to fall as snow, which reinforces or deepens the cooling. A lack of snow cover allows temperatures to rise more readily, making rain more likely.

The final DNR snow depth maps of the month show the toll the warm December has had on the landscape. Only the far northwest corner of the state had a measurable snowpack (of just 1-4 inches), and over 95% of the state was effectively free of snow cover. In parts northern and northeastern Minnesota, this is the only time on record with no snow cover during this week of the year.

Typically, when a month ends up warmer, or even much warmer than normal, it's because the warm days are more frequent and/or of greater magnitude than the cool days. In December of 2023, however, the cool days were simply nowhere to be found. In the Twin Cities and St. Cloud, no days (zero) had below-normal temperatures. Rochester, Duluth, and International Falls each had just one or two below-normal days, each cooler than normal by just a degree or two. So this historically warm December has also been historically persistent. No other Decembers on record were as reliably mild or warm as this one.

Through December 28, 2023, Minnesota's "first-order" climate stations at Duluth, International Falls, Rochester, St. Cloud, and the Twin Cities were 10-16 degrees F above normal, generally ranking as the warmest on record, with the exception of Duluth, which was ranked #2. The highest temperature recorded in the state was 68 degrees F at Canby, on December 8.

Minnesota's combined, aggregated record goes back to 1895, and this December is virtually certain to be the warmest on a statewide basis during that period of record. At Duluth and the Twin Cities, temperature records go back into the 1870s, and December of 1877 stands out at both stations as the warmest. The current December may well edge out 1877 in the Twin Cities, though it appears it will fall short in Duluth, which in 1877 took measurements near the lake shore, where warmer winter conditions are more common.

With many stations in central Minnesota recording over three inches of precipitation for the month and almost all stations finishing above normal, December of 2023 is also a contender for wettest on record, on a statewide basis. No month in history back to 1895 has achieved top rankings for both temperature and precipitation. The closest was August of 1900, which was the wettest and 4th-warmest August on record.

A few times a week I cook something completely new. Sometimes it's my own idea, other times the recipe comes from elsewhere. That's how we ended up here. I came across a Warm Red Cabbage Salad with Dried Fruit and Feta in the Complete Tassajara Cookbook I bought a few weeks back. I liked the idea of a warm winter salad - sweet and salty, rich with color, texture, and flavor and was excited to give it a try.

I figured it out. I created it through "Contacts" instead of "Companies." In the "About" part of the particular contact, click on "View all properties" at the bottom. Then, under "All properties," click on "Create a contact property." Then click on the orange "Create a property" button. And you can pretty much take it from there. I named mine Lead Score and for Field type, I used Radio select, for mutally exclusive selections: hot, warm, cold. Hope that helps

The Department of Energy (DOE) has regulated the energy efficiency level of commercial warm air furnaces since 1994. Commercial warm air furnaces are self-contained oil-fired or gas-fired furnaces that are designed to supply heated air through ducts to spaces that require it. Commercial warm air furnaces are industrial equipment and have a maximum rated input capacity of 225,000 British thermal units (Btu) an hour or more.

In addition, as required by law when issuing a direct finalrule, DOE has also issued a pre-publication supplemental notice of proposedrulemaking (SNOPR). DOE is proposing to amend the energy conservation standardsfor both small, large, and very large air-cooled commercial package airconditioning, heating equipment, and commercial warm air furnaces identical tothose set forth in a direct final rule published elsewhere in this FederalRegister. (December 17, 2015). For more information please see the rulemaking webpage.

The following content summarizes the energy conservation standards for commercial warm air furnaces. The text is not an official reproduction of the Code of Federal Regulations and should not be used for legal research or citation.

The standard covers gas-fired and oil-fired warm air furnaces that are industrial equipment and that have a capacity (maximum rated input) of 225,000 Btu per hour or more. Commercial warm air furnaces manufactured and distributed in commerce, as defined by 42 U.S.C. 6291 (16), on or after January 1, 1994, must meet the energy conservation standards specified in the Code of Federal Regulations, 10 CFR 431.77.
