One of this facility's intial walruses was named "Jorik". The identity of this individual is unknown; they either had their tusks extracted or worn near the gumline. I believe this individual most likely passed away during or prior to 2016, but may have survived up to 2017-2021 at most.
The CITES Trade Database shows a single import of 19 or 22 walruses into China in 2014 — it is likely that this was the initial herd purchased by Chimelong.
Chimelong stated in April of 2015 that their walruses were between "1 and 3 years old", while a scientific article published in 2023 stated that the park's walruses were between 3 and 6 years old, assumed to be from the beginning of the study period in 2016. This places the herd's years of birth around 2010 to 2014. Additionally, the park stated in 2023 that the herd averaged 10 years of age — with the exception of the two individuals who were said to have been born in 2012, Walrus Network generally considers Chimelong's wild-caught walruses to have been born around 2013.
Chimelong is known to have housed 16 walruses — eight males and eight females — from 2016 to 2019.
This park currently houses the largest herd of walruses in the world.
