When you run BGInfo it shows you the appearance and content of itsdefault desktop background. If left untouched it will automaticallyapply these settings and exit after its 10 second count-down timerexpires.

Background: Selects the color and/or wallpaper to use for thebackground. If you select the Copy existing settings option thenBGInfo will use whatever information is currently selected by thelogged on user. This option allows end users to personalize theirdesktop while still displaying the BGInfo information.

Desktops: Selects which desktops are updated when the configurationis applied. By default only the User Desktop wallpaper is changed.Enabling the Logon Desktop for Console users option specifies thatthe wallpaper should be displayed on the logon desktop that is presentedbefore anyone has logged onto the system. On Windows 95/98/ME systemsthe same desktop is used for users and the login screen, so this optionhas no effect. Enabling the Logon Desktop for Terminal Servicesusers option specifies that the wallpaper should be displayed on theTerminal Services login screen. Bitmap|Match Display: Creates a bitmap with color depth matchingthat of the display. Because the bitmap generated by BGInfo is notupdated when a user changes the display's color depth you may seeunexpected results (especially dithering of the text and background)with some combinations of bitmap and display depth.

In Colors, you can let Windows pull an accent color from your background, or choose your own color adventure. After you've selected an accent color, scroll down to indicate where you want to see the color show up. Or scroll up to Choose your mode and you can see whether your accent color looks better in a Dark or Light mode.

Up until a couple months ago, if I changed my wallpaper/background image, I could choose between tile, zoom, centre, scale, fill or span. These options no longer appear in GUI for changing the background image.

I am using Ubuntu 17.10.

I have a script that updates my desktop background every day with the NASA APOD. Since upgrading to 11.10, that script stopped working, presumably because I'm using gconftool-2 to actually update the desktop background. Is there a new way to do this under Unity?

This answer is an edit of the original answer. As I've progressed in my Ubuntu and Linux studies, I've discovered a variety of approaches and deepened my understanding of how setting a background works in Ubuntu. This answer is my attempt to document as best as possible what I've learned thus far, and is done in hopes that this material can be useful for others.

What exactly does gsettings command do ? Well, first of all, there exists dconf database of settings for each user, which is intended as replacement for deprecated GConf, and it is accessible via either dconf command or gsettings. In particular , we're dealing here with org.gnome.desktop.background schema and one of its keys, picture-uri.

URI, that file:///home/JohnDoe/Pictures/cool_wallpaper.png, actually stands for Uniform Resource Identifier, which originally was created for internet usage, but there is file URI scheme , which is what we see here. What's cool about URI is that it gives byte-encoded path if you use a non-english locale, for example with my Chinese desktop, I have following URI for my backgroun: 'file:///home/xieerqi/%E5%9B%BE%E7%89%87/Wallpapers/moon_moon.jpg'

Of course, this is not the only way. Python has an API for Gio ( which is the main library behind gsettings ). I've written a gsettings_get and gsettings_set functions, which were quite useful for other projects such as Launcher List Indicator. In case of setting a background, it can also be used and I've used it just recently for this question. Here's a simplified version of that same approach:

Of course, same rules for scripts apply here too: ensure it is made executable with chmod +x set_wallpaper.py and store it in (preferrably) ~/bin folder. I am connecting remotely to a computer on LAN and it keeps giving me a pitch black desktop background (wallpaper). In the RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) program on the local computer I have the option "Desktop background" enabled.

Check the group policy settings on the remote computer (the computer you're connecting to)! There's a remote session policy that controls whether or not the desktop background (wallpaper) is displayed when a client connects to the host. The name of this policy is "Enforce Removal of Remote Desktop Wallpaper".

You should now be able to see and change the desktop background on the remote computer, from the local computer. But you will still have to enable the option "Desktop background" in the RDP (remote desktop protocol) client (i.e. RDC on XP/Vista/7/8) when you connect to the remote. Only this time, the remote computer will not be preventing you to see and change the desktop background.

I have a photo set as my current iPhone wallpaper, which I would like to save. I have forgotten where I stored this file on my computer originally, so I can't easily go back to place it back on my phone. It has since been deleted from my camera roll.

You cannot export the wallpaper, depending on the pattern (if it were repetitive) it would be possible to take screen shots and after emailing these to your self you could edit in Photoshop (other editing software is available)

One way that may require the help of an octopus is to go to Wallpaper settings click on wallpaper preview that is not the lock screen and pinch the image so it shrinks in the screen - this will get the "Cancel/Set" buttons out of the image. If you let go of the pinch, it'll bounce back, so the trick is to pinch and screen grab at the same time. Then you can crop out the wallpaper setting details in newly captured image in Photos. I was able to do this with four fingers on two hands (no feet required :)) on an iPhone 4s, not sure how dexterous you need to be on an iPhone 6 or 6 plus.

With iOS 7 installed on my iPhone 5 and while viewing my lock screen I plugged a power cable into my phone. For a split second all the text overlays disappeared from my lock screen then a battery power status icon appeared. If you are quick you can take a screen grab of the clean wallpaper.

Important to note

Before doing this, go to Settings->Wallpaper and make sure "Perspective Zoom" is turned off. Otherwise when setting this newly captured image as a wallpaper it is automatically scaled up so you will lose some information around the edges.

Easy( if lock screen wallpaper) just go to settings wallpaper the selet the lock screen one and pinch the wallpaper with fingers and bring it in the middle may take a few tries and thats when you screenshot. Crop later.

Double click, remove all apps from recently used, take another screenshot, then edit the 2 photos together, and if done properly, you'll be able to salvage a new version of the background in it's entirety.

Always upload your pictures to Google Photos. I found my wallpaper photo from 5 years ago of my daughters by searching on my Google Photos list by my daughter's name. Google photos will index all your photos. Just assign a name to a person in one of your photos, and Google will find all matching photos and assign that name to them. Even group photos will be found under multiple names.

I just took screen shot (simultaneously press wake/on and home buttons) of wallpaper photo on old iphone 5. I will crop out the bottom homepage icons. Before taking screen shot, to get a clear wallpaper photo without icons, I moved all icons off the last page of homepage except one icon which I transferred to bottom icon bar. When I initially moved all the icons off last homepage, the last page disappeared so I moved last icon to bottom icon bar in order to get clear wallpaper photo for screen shot.

Just take a screenshot of all the default screenshot choices in settings where you change wallpapers. Then take the saved image and zoom up on the one you like and crop it. It's indistinguishable from the full-size image.
