Sanders Mine was founded in 1895 by John Sanders. Initially a small mining settlement, it grew to be the first major location in Walker Creek County. It was primarily a gold and silver mine. At one point while mining, they encountered a series of caverns housing our kin. They suffered from a Mine Collapse in 1902 that led to the deaths of 17 miners. In 1931, after being retired from use, it was converted into the Sanders Mine Historical Park. In 1964, after decades of falling into disrepair, major renovations were done to the area, sponsored by the newly formed Walker Creek Historical Society and John's wife, Delilah. The buildings and mine itself have been heavily restored and are now available for tours, along with hosting historical reenactments, storytelling, and more.
