The brain is at constant risk to be hurt and impaired in its function by traumatic injuries or chronic diseases, associated with inflammation and neurodegeneration. In contrast to many other organs and tissues such as the skin or liver in mammals that retain the capacity to regenerate and regain at least partially lost functions, the brain cannot simply regrow injured areas that become functionally connected to the unharmed regions of the brain [1].
