Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi Opens Prototype Underground Stormwater Storage Learning Center, Welcoming ACTEC Delegates from Japan

August 1, 2025 – The Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT), hosted the presentation ceremony and official opening of the Prototype Underground Stormwater Storage Learning Centerunder the Water Adaptation Innovation Center (WAIC). WAIC is a specialized research unit focused on the design and development of water-related innovations across four scales: urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, and interior design.

The event was honored by the presence of a delegation from ACTEC, Japan, an organization that plays a key role in promoting international innovations in environmental and infrastructure development. Representatives from Thai government agencies and distinguished guests from various sectors also attended to witness the presentation of the prototype project, “Underground Rainwater Storage Innovation for Flood Prevention: Inspired by King Rama IX’s Monkey Cheek Concept.” The system, developed within the Faculty of Architecture, features an underground rainwater storage capacity of over 170 cubic meters, serving as both a practical water retention solution and a learning platform for future academic advancement.

On this occasion, the Vice President of RMUTT delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the university’s vision to become a hub of innovation and a training ground for innovators ready to meet the challenges of the modern world. The collaboration with ACTEC and the Embassy of Japan in Thailand marks the beginning of an expanded academic and technological partnership in the region.

Today’s program also featured the presentation of the PRSS (Plastic Rainwater Storage Structure) engineering and design report, an exhibition of WAIC projects, and a site tour of the actual installation area, which is currently under construction and undergoing system testing.

* WAIC and Rewastec Join Forces for Sustainable Water Management Innovation

The Water Adaptation Innovation Center (WAIC), Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT),
has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rewastec Co., Ltd. to jointly develop and research innovative materials and sustainable water management systems.

This collaboration aims to develop a composite material made from Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic (PCR) blended with natural fibers and agricultural by-products, leading to the creation of a new water retention structure, “WaterCude.”
This innovation is designed to be durable, corrosion-free, strong, and 100% recyclable.

The project promotes the advancement of Green Infrastructure systems to help mitigate flooding, enhance the efficiency of rainwater utilization, and support the national Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy initiative.
It also fosters knowledge exchange between academia and industry to elevate the sustainable use of materials nationwide.

* Rewastec Unlocks Sustainable Future

The Water Adaptation Innovation Center (WAIC), Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, was honored by Rewastec Co., Ltd. to be invited to the event “Rewastec Unlocks Sustainable Future,” a significant launch showcasing new innovations and collaborations in sustainable materials. The event was held at the Sapphire Suite, Novotel Platinum, with the aim of advancing circular material development, driving Thailand’s low-carbon economy, and fostering knowledge exchange and collaborative networks in environmental innovation and climate adaptation.

The event was honored by the presence of

Dr. Krichphaka Boonfueng, Executive Director of the National Innovation Agency (NIA), who delivered the opening remarks and a keynote speech on Green Innovation Leadership, presenting perspectives on green innovation and sustainable development directions for Thailand.

In addition, Dr. Sanat Wongtaweethong, expert in innovation from the Technology and Innovation-Based Enterprise Development Fund (TED Fund), shared valuable insights on the role of sustainable materials in strengthening Thailand’s circular economy.

This event marked an important milestone for Rewastec in reinforcing its vision, “From Waste to Worth,” alongside the launch of composite plastic pellets developed from plastic waste and agricultural residues, capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 89%.

The “Rewastec Unlocks Sustainable Future” event truly reflects the shared commitment to advancing environmentally friendly innovations and propelling Thailand toward a genuinely sustainable future.
