Mount Gibbs
Ascent of Mount Gibbs (South Slope, class 1), with René Renteria, July 23, 2018.
Timeline:
July 23, 2018. We departed from the trailhead at the Walker Lake campground at 7:29 and hiked along a faint use trail on the slopes above Walker Lake toward Bloody Canyon. Losing the trail a couple of times, we finally found the main trail up to Mono Pass. We were at the pass at 10:25 and turned north to climb up the South Slope of Mount Gibbs (Class 1). We reached the summit at 12:20 and had lunch there, enjoying views of June Mountain, Mammoth Mountain, Red Slate Mountain, Koip Peak, the Lyell-Maclure group, Matthes Crest, Cathedral Peak, Tuolumne Meadows, Ragged Peak, Mount Conness, Mount Dana and Mount Warren (Mono Lake is not visible from the summit of Mount Gibbs). We left the summit at 13:05 and hurried back to Mono Pass as clouds were gathering. A rain shower started as we were almost back at the pass. We hiked down Bloody Canyon under occasional rain, but the real storm started as we reached the trailhead at 16:30. (A 9:01 hour day, 13 miles roundtrip with 4,600 feet of elevation gain).
