Ascents of Mount Haeckel (Northwest Arête, class 4), Mount Wallace (North Face, class 3) and failed ascent of Mount Darwin (West Ridge, class 3), with Robert Zeithammer, June 17-20, 2014
Timeline:
June 17, 2014. Robert and I spent the morning in Mammoth organizing our trip and left the trailhead at Lake Sabrina at 13:00. We reached camp near Sailor Lake at 17:30. A 4:30 hour day.
June 18, 2014. We left camp at 7:05 and reached the notch at the base of Mount Haeckel’s Northwest Arête at 10:20. We were on the summit of Mount Haeckel at 12:15, and the summit of Mount Wallace at 14:00. We were back in camp at 17:25. A 10:20 hour day.
June 19, 2014. We left camp at 6:30, taking a long time to approach Mount Darwin over Darwin Col. We reached the base of the West Ridge of Mount Darwin at noon, and decided to turn back in light of the late hour and loose snow on the approach ledges and gully. We were back at Darwin Col at 13:30 and decided to hike up the class 3 slabs to the summit of Peak 13,048 which we reached at 13:45. We were back in camp at Sailor Lake at 17:00 pm. A 10:30 hour day.
June 20, 2014. We left camp at 9:00 and were back at the car at 11:30. We drove back to LA that afternoon after lunch at Jack’s in Bishop.
