Project Two:
The Mass-Produced Object
- or -
The Bespoke Object, Revisited
(Due Monday, April 7 @ Class Start)
For this project, you will design and create an object using digital fabrication processes with the goal of making it mass-producible. Your object should be conceived as a product—something that could realistically be produced at scale using methods like 3D printing, CNC machining, or laser cutting.
Explore the intersection of design, fabrication, and production scalability.
Develop a digital model suited for efficient replication.
Consider material constraints, production methods, and potential market appeal.
Your design must be digitally fabricated (3D printed, CNC cut, laser-cut, etc.).
It should be feasible for mass production—consider factors like modularity, stackability, or ease of assembly.
Present your final object as a product, including a name, a brief description of its function, and potential use cases.
Document your process, highlighting design iterations and production considerations.
Your final presentation should showcase both the fabricated object and your thought process in making it viable for mass production.
Project 2 Proposal
(Due Monday, March 10 @ class start)
Create a Tentative Proposal for Project Two on your OBDF 311 Process Blog.
This proposal should include:
- A brief description of your concept
- Original sketches/diagrams or mockups to visually communicate your ideas
- Thoughts on what processes (digital and physical) may be required to produce said project
- Any additional media (images, screenshots, videos, etc) that may be helpful for communicating the concept for your project.
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Group 1: 3D Printing bespoke artifacts with Clay (and plastic!): Daniela S, Isis F, Vian E
Group 2: Shelf Design: Beck I, Kyla P
4:10 pm - 6:10 pm
Group 3: Sculpting / Modelling Software (Blender, ZBrush, etc.): GJ D, Sophie K, Isabelle O
Group 4: Large Scale Laser Cut Pieces: Amanda A, Marina D
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Group 5: Hair Pieces (for different uses): Carmel C, Maddy B
Group 6: Digital Modeling & Prototyping: Dylan M, Jose M, Noor K
4:10 pm - 6:10 pm
Group 7: Wearables & Interaction Design: Brianna C, Lu B, Shan Y
Group 8: Artistic Process & Concept Development: Jaemin J, Emily S
This week's class period will be studio time. Bryan will be available in the classroom, thing tank or woodshop to assist with project production. We will begin 1:1 studio meetings next week!
Project One: The Bespoke Object (Due Monday, February 27 March 3)
bespoke (definition)
adjective
be·spoke | bi-ˈspōk
1: custom-made
ex: a bespoke sound system
2: specially made for a particular person:
ex: a bespoke suit
Synonyms
custom-made, tailored
Students will create a bespoke (one-of-a-kind, custom or purpose-made) object that considers contexts in art, technology, craft, and/or design.
Week One Task: Process Blog (Due Monday, Feb 3 @ class start)
Create a Tentative Proposal for Project One as your first OBDF 311 Process Blog post.
This proposal should include:
- A brief description of your concept
- Original sketches/diagrams or mockups to visually communicate your ideas
- Thoughts on what processes (digital and physical) may be required to produce said project
- A brief written consideration of how this object fits the framework of "The Bespoke Object." (it's okay to stretch here)
- Any additional media (images, screenshots, videos, etc) that may be helpful for communicating the concept for your project.
- Have your URL ready to share by the start of next class!
Monday, January 20 REMINDERS:
1.) Class starts @ 3pm on Jan 20!!!
2.) Your process blog and first post are due. See information regarding this assignment below.
This course enables students to propose and develop their projects, merging tools and strategies from previous OBDF courses. Through self-directed learning and access to technology, they integrate CAD, 3D modeling, and digital fabrication with their artistic vision. Guided by faculty mentors and interdisciplinary collaboration, they refine designs, address technical and conceptual aspects, and participate in group critiques. By course end, students showcase their projects, demonstrating applied skills, expanded expertise, and a deeper understanding of object design and fabrication.
Prepare yourself for an extraordinary semester. Yay, art! Yay, design! Yay, cats!
