♡ My Romantic Landscaping and Gardening designs are inspired by both formal and informal gardens worldwide. To create a mood, I set the stage with a few of my favorite things to create a vintage Victorian "Romantic Mood Board" featuring the sun and the moon, my luscious peonies with fragrant petals, my soft ferns, elegant pearls and glimmering reflections everywhere. I was kind of thinking the lighting would be the warm glow of a Tuscan Sun. I have worked on color schemes and aerial maps to add here soon. A timeline is available at 🕛 V News.
The next two Instagram posts are/were sneak peeks of our "romantic garden" inspirations we can now resume.

My Romantic Garden began a long time ago but needed a "refresh" to replace high maintenance, oversized shrubs with miniture versions. I decided to use some of the technology and resources I teach and a few keywords in Adobe Firefly of plants I have (and want) into a formally balanced composition to create the first photo above. The method was not perfect. Once completed, I dragged it into Adobe Color Palette to extract the colors shown in the palette I created in Adobe Photoshop. I moved the circles around to pick five of the most dominant colors I liked. I took a screen shot. With those five colors, I created a color grid in Adobe Photoshop with the dominant colors down the middle. I created smaller squares inside and intensified the hues. On both sides of the main colors, I created "tints" and "shades". I presented the grid inside the same photo above it for easy color and plant comparisons.
From this point I stared gathering plant images to place in a "key" for my aerial landscaping map (in progress using Adobe Illustrator). I combined the "elements" of design (line, shape, value, texture, color and plants) using the "principles" of design, (harmony, variety, scale, balance, contrast, etc. to create both a formal and informal design. — to be continued.
I use these color strips/tiles (inside this site) to allow me to compare and contrast plant combinations for the best color POP! I use HEX (hexadecimal values not shown here) to ensure color consistency.

Our dilemma and tough choices to make! Tap for more:
We have a "wrap around" porch and a tiny front yard. We would like to complement our home with two "flanking" ornamental trees/shrubs that provide a lot of coordinated color, have open branch habits to see through and not be too tall as they will be under power lines. They will be in Zone 6b, full sun and must be hardy. My choice plants' sizes below start at Zone 6 with the smallest of Monrovia's Japanese Maples, Redbuds, Dogwoods, and Magnolias to larger varieties of each, (but the links here allow "all" USDA growing zones 3-11 to be included).
♡ Deciduous. "Low, spreading branches on a beautifully mounded, weeping dwarf form. Rich, red, deeply dissected foliage holds its color throughout the growing season, developing more vibrant red tones in the fall." Slow growing dwarf reaching; 2-3' ft. H x 6-8' W in 12 yrs. Zone 4-9
♡ Deciduous. "A spectacular dwarf Japanese maple with dense, compact branching on an upright habit and a rounded, ovate crown. My Hosta Story & Deer (from discouragement to hope!)
I used to have 40 hostas in six varieties, but the deer became so overpopulated and started to be fed by people in our neighborhood. Once they were discovered, my hostas became the "salad bar" on their path. We use Liquid Fence: Deer & Rabbit, which works, but it became tiresome and expensive. We moved portions of them closer to the house with no luck. I divided them and gave them as gifts! But I became so discouraged trying to maintain them in the landscape. My only hope is to have them in containers on the porches, but nowhere near the edge! I am going to try again in the landscape, but with the "systemic" granules: Liquid Fence: Deer & Rabbit Repellent Granular2 this time. We havy tiny remants of the varieties shown below.

♡ Still Life: Flowers and Fruit, detail, oil on canvas, 1850–55 American Severin Roesen. Tap for more:
Severin Roesen | Still Life: Flowers and Fruit | American | The Metropolitan Museum of Art "Over a dozen varieties of fresh flowers and fruit are featured in this visual spectacle. Nineteenth-century improvements in cultivation and shipping practices enabled the extravagant assortment, which includes a tropical pineapple and a pomegranate that allude to the nation’s future bounty. A German immigrant, Roesen fled the revolutions of 1848 for the promises of America. He exhibited in New York in the 1850s, sending eleven paintings to the American Art-Union’s Free Gallery exhibitions between 1848 and 1852. In 1863 he settled in Pennsylvania, where his patrons included lumber industry moguls who reveled in the perceived limitlessness of American resources." –The Met

♡ "Night and Sleep" 1878 oil on canvas by Evelyn De Morgan at the De Morgan Museum, UK. Tap for more:
"Night floats through the evening sky, his red robes reminiscent of the sunset, and his billowing cloak darkening the sky behind him. He floats arm in arm with Sleep, who gently scatters poppies onto the earth beneath, from the armful of flowers that he has taken from his girdle. (The Victorians used laudanum as a sleeping draught, which was made from tincture of the opium poppy.) Both figures appear relaxed, with closed eyes, as if already half-asleep. The composition for the painting was inspired by Botticelli’s Birth of Venus where Zephyr and Chloris fly with limbs entwined as a twofold entity: the ruddy Zephyr (Greek for “the west wind”) is puffing vigorously; while the fair Chloris gently sighs the warm breath that wafts Venus ashore. All around them fall roses–each with a golden heart–which, according to legend, came into being at Venus’ birth."
