Hi Travel Friends,
Exploring Cusco, Peru: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Adventure
Cusco, Peru—a city where Incan history, colonial architecture, and breathtaking landscapes merge into an unforgettable experience. Whether you're here for Machu Picchu, the vibrant local culture, or the bold culinary scene (yes, even guinea pig!), Cusco offers an adventure like no other.
🏛️ Day 1: Arriving in the Heart of the Inca Empire
After arriving in Cusco, the first thing that hits you (besides the stunning mountain views) is the altitude. At 11,152 feet above sea level, taking it slow is essential. Hydrating, chewing coca leaves, and enjoying a warm cup of mate de coca are great ways to adjust to the elevation.
📍 San Pedro Plaza & Historic Cusco
Walking through the Plaza de Armas, Cusco’s historic heart, you can feel the mix of Incan and Spanish colonial history.
The Cusco Cathedral stands tall, filled with intricate wood carvings and stunning religious artwork.
🌟 Pro Tip: Take it slow and soak in the beauty of the city’s cobblestone streets and colorful markets.
🍽️ Day 2: A Culinary Adventure – Guinea Pig & More!
Cusco’s food scene is bold, rich, and full of Andean tradition. One of the most talked-about dishes? Cuy al Horno (Roast Guinea Pig).
🐹 Yes, guinea pig is a delicacy in Peru, often served whole and crispy, with sides of potatoes, yuca, and a fresh Andean salad. It’s definitely an experience—and if you’re adventurous, it’s worth a try!
Other must-try dishes:
✅ Lomo Saltado – Stir-fried beef with onions, tomatoes, and fries
✅ Aji de Gallina – Spicy, creamy chicken stew
✅ Chicha Morada – A sweet, purple corn drink
🚂 Day 3: The Journey to Machu Picchu
Getting to Machu Picchu is an adventure in itself. The journey begins with a train ride through the Sacred Valley, offering incredible views of lush mountains and rushing rivers.
🚆 Taking the Train
The Machu Picchu Train is a comfortable way to reach Aguas Calientes, the gateway to the ancient city.
Sitting by the window is a must—the scenery is unforgettable!
🌄 The Inca Trail & Entrance to Machu Picchu
After arriving, we made our way to the entrance of the Inca Trail, where the famous sign welcomes trekkers. Even if you’re not doing the full Inca Trail hike, the excitement of standing on this historic path is unmatched.
🏔️ Day 4: Machu Picchu – The Lost City of the Incas
Finally, the highlight of the trip: Machu Picchu.
Standing in front of the majestic ruins, surrounded by the Andes Mountains, is surreal. The site’s energy is magnetic, and whether you’re exploring the Temple of the Sun, hiking to the Sun Gate, or simply taking in the views, the experience is breathtaking.
📍 Must-See Spots in Machu Picchu:
The Intihuatana Stone – An ancient Incan sundial
Temple of the Three Windows – One of the best-preserved Inca structures
Huayna Picchu – The towering peak that offers an unreal view of the ruins
🌟 Pro Tip: Arrive early in the morning to experience Machu Picchu with fewer crowds and watch the mist rise over the ruins.
🎭 Day 5: Back to Cusco & Final Adventures
Exploring the vibrant San Pedro Market for handmade souvenirs and Peruvian textiles
Visiting the Sacsayhuamán ruins, an impressive Incan fortress with massive stone walls
One last Pisco Sour before saying goodbye to the Andean highlands
