Volkswagen Virtus May 2022 India Launch Confirmed
Volkswagen Virtus Will Launch in May
Confirmed Launching on May 2022
Mid-sized sedans have been quite popular in India prior to the latest trends of mid-sized SUVs taking over the country. Perhaps mid-sized offerings having aged quite a lot in the country, with Volkswagen Vento now being an almost 20-year-old offering, is the root of their veining interest? Volkswagen believes that the mid-size sedan category is still quite important in India and is all on track to make the latest Volkswagen Virtus available for sale in India, post its March 2022 global reveal.
While the Virtus may replace the now old Vento, the dimensions of the test car spotted are significantly larger. Meaning it will be a significant modern update over the older Vento. In fact, sharing its platform with the Volkswagen Taigun SUV means that the Virtus may claim class-leading dimensions in its segment.
Reviving the Mid-Sized Sedans
With the introduction of the new 'global' mid-sized sedan, Volkswagen aims to bring balance to what has been its predominantly SUV portfolio in recent months and years. Speaking on this, the brand in recent interviews has confirmed that after its premiere in March, the Virtus is set for an India launch in the third week of May. After its India launch, the Virtus will be progressively launched in various international markets as well.
While Volkswagen doesn't expect its new sedan's sale to rival its Taigun SUV, the brand does expect the new sedan offering to be a breath of fresh air for the customers, thanks to personal mobility becoming more commonplace with families having multiple cars in their stables of various body types. To that end, Volkswagen's sister company, Skoda, is working on the new Skoda Slavia (Rapid replacer) as well, to flesh out the mid-sized sedan segment.
Volkswagen Virtus: What We Know
Though much isn't known about the upcoming Volkswagen Virtus, the automotive media industry is rampant with calculated speculation. The Virtus intends to be based on the Volkswagen Taigun platform that also underpins the Skoda Kushaq and the upcoming Skoda Slavia.
While the Virtus will get Volkswagen touches, it is expected that a lot of interior elements may be shared with the Slavia, as is seen between the Taigun and the Kushaq.
Talking about the upcoming Volkswagen Virtus's engine specifications, that information is currently unknown. However, Volkswagen has confirmed that the sedan will get only petrol variants. It is possible that the Vento's 1.0-litre petrol plant could do duties in the Virtus, while a high-performance variant with the Taigun's 1.5-litre TSI powertrain might also be an option.
The Volkswagen Virtus could be priced around the ₹9 lakh to ₹12 lakh mark (Ex-Showroom), which puts it as a direct replacement for the ageing Vento.
