October 12, 2021 School Board Meeting: Blades has added a discussion item to the agenda. Anderson and Youngblood also want to move forward with the ban. During the discussion, Blades demands an immediate vote to ban the teaching of critical race theory. The other Trustees question the language and process. Elsasser asks if she is requesting a resolution be drafted and she asks why we would need a resolution, we can just ban the teaching of CRT. Buck suggests asking for parent feedback on this issue. In response, Blades argues that "I think we've heard from the people here that they do not want CRT." Language for a resolution is requested for the following meeting.

On April 5th, the PYLUSD Board of Trustees passed Resolution 21-12 To Ban the Teaching of Critical Race Theory. It was passed 3-2 with Carrie Buck and Karin Freeman voting against.
On April 5th, the PYLUSD Board of Trustees passed Resolution 21-12 To Ban the Teaching of Critical Race Theory. It was passed 3-2 with Carrie Buck and Karin Freeman voting against.
There were 41 public comments in total, 35 of them being against the Resolution.
The district’s attorney, Mr. Todd Robbins, explained to the trustees that as it stands, their resolution would most likely be unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. Blades read from a Blexit pamphlet;
Anderson made an argument about white slavery during the Viking period and Blades offered an illegitimate OC Board of Education poll to support the ban in the face of so much stakeholder push back.
Update: Blades read from a Blexit pamphlet, which she had shared with the group, and all three demonstrated their misunderstandings of American history (Anderson argued that the founding fathers spoke out against slavery - they did, but only their own enslavement by King George - and Youngblood suggested that white indentured servitude was the same as the enslavement of black people on the American continent).

On March 23rd, 2022, a special meeting ( board workshop) is scheduled to further discuss the proposed Ban on the Teaching of Critical Race Theory. This meeting will be at 4:00 p.m. If the resolution language is agreed upon it will likely come up for a final vote at the following meeting.

It is worth noting that on or just before March 2nd, 2022 the AP College Board released a powerful statement condemning bans of this type, stating "If a school bans required topics from their AP courses, the AP Program removes the AP designation from that course ..."

The week of March 6th, 2022 the AP College Board, the governing body for all AP courses in the country, released a statement: What AP Stands For. Among the many points made in the statement was this, "If a school bans required topics from their AP courses, the AP Program removes the AP designation from that course and its inclusion in the AP Course Ledger provided to colleges and universities."

She states that "some of the latest research is showing that socio-emotional learning is actually being linked to Critical Race Theory." Freeman counters that she does not see the nexus.
Citizens for Renewing America and other far-right think tanks have linked unrelated concepts to CRT and disseminated this misinformation across the country.

"As with other orders of this nature, it appears specifically designed to chill classroom conversations between teachers and learners, rather than to support the real aims of public education."

January 5, 2022: American Historical Association (AHA) sends letter to PYLUSD opposing proposed Resolution Opposing the Teaching of Critical Race Theory. “If the district is committed to academic freedom,” the AHA writes, “why has it singled out one set of ideas—critical race theory—as a subject that cannot be taught in Placentia-Yorba Linda schools?” The AHA hopes history teachers will not be required to minimize historical transgressions or their influence on the evolution of American institutions. “To do so would be a direct and clear violation of ‘the commitment to teach a complete and accurate account of history.’”
