ESL 099 - Intermediate Reading, Writing, and VocabularyThis is an intermediate-level English language course for students whose first language is not English. This is a developmental ESL course designed to help students compose fluent and accurate writing as used in academic settings. Students will develop a greater sense of confidence in using written English as a method of communication. Emphasis will be placed on achieving unity and coherence in written compositions and on understanding the mechanical aspects of the essay. Students will learn to read for meaning and to analyze authentic texts. Through reading, writing, and specific exercises, students will expand their grasp of vocabulary and idiom needed for academic work and progress into ESL 103 . (The credit for this course does not apply toward a baccalaureate or an associate degree.)

This is an intermediate level course designed to teach appropriate reading skills, such as the ability to make inferences, draw conclusions, understand the meaning of vocabulary words in context through word analysis and contextual clues, and determine the main idea from a passage. Students read from a variety of sources, including newspapers, essays, short stories, and novels. Students also increase their academic vocabulary through vocabulary building activities.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of code switching on Iranian upper-intermediate EFL learners' vocabulary learning. To this end, 64 participants out of 90 male students were selected and randomly divided into two equal experimental groups - experimental and control groups. Then, the groups were pretested by a vocabulary pre-test. Then after, the participants of experimental group received the treatment, i.e., using code switching. After the treatment ended, both groups took the post-test of vocabulary. The results of paired and independent samples t-tests revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test.
