Hi,

we use VAAD with PVS 1912 LTSR CU 2.

After we create a new version an try updating our VDI with the newest VMWare tools we get a bluescreen, see attachment.

Then we do a reverse image of the VDI to a vSphere VM and updated the tools.

This works fine without bluescreen.

After i reimage the VDI and try to start the VDI with PVS i get a bluescreen again.

What can i do?

Regards

Dennis

I recently installed VMWare Workstation Player 14 on my Linux workstation to run a Windows 10 development machine. The option to install VMware Tools in the Virtual Machine menu was greyed out and inaccessible, despite having already downloaded the Tools ISO's. Thinking this was due to using Player as an unlicensed non-commercial application, I purchased a license to try and remedy this (I need OpenGL support for what I'm working on). After licensing the app, this menu option was still greyed out. Then I realized that I could mount the ISO through the DVD Drive and install the tools this way. Doing so worked, but I would like to know if this required a license in the first place. As a student, $156 isn't chump change and would like to put in a refund/cancellation if a license is not required as I'm not doing any commercial work.

Vmware Download Tools

Productizing VMware Tools. Yes, you heard it right. Now VMware Tools are independently available and can be downloaded as a separate product from my.vmware.com portal. This essentially means that VMware Tools will also feature in VMware Lifecycle Product Matrix, giving customers full visibility about VMware Tools lifecycle.

I followed exactly the case "Installing vm tools on a Ubuntu guest" from this official page. And under usr/src/open-vm-tools-2010.06.16 I have a bunch of folders vmblock, vmci, etc.., so it seems things went ok. Yet after reboot of the vm the tools don't seem to be installed. An the command vmware-tooldoes not work.

If I remember correctly, at some point Ubuntu switched to open-vm-tools, try this package instead of the old vmware tools. Those packages are based on the source code VMware released, but are open source.

When you log in to vSphere, you might see that a server has a VMware Tools status of "toolsNotRunning" or "toolsNotInstalled" on a VM, but when you log in to Windows, you will see that VMware Tools is installed and when you go in to Services, you will see the VMware Tools service listed as "Running". If you try to stop the service, you get an error that reads, "1053 The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion", then you can start the service again, refresh the VM page in the vSphere Web Client, and it will show "Running" as it should.

Does anyone know if SAM can monitor the actual status of VMware Tools as reported to vSphere, Virtualization Manager, etc? I am basically thinking that anything with a status other than "toolsOK" should try to restart the VMware Tools service. Im just kind of lost on how to get SAM to "see" these statuses.

So I tried to manually take the snapshot and, sure enough, I get a failure immediately from within vCenter Server that the VM cannot be Quiesced. Looking at the Summary Tab of the VM it shows this for VMware tools: "Not running, version:10246 (Current)"

If I remote desktop in the Server 2012 VM, I see that the VMware tools icon is running in the task bar. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing VMware tools for the VM and it doesn't fix the issue. I then found this KB article Opens a new window and followed it but it didn't work either and it's not really applicable to my version of ESXi either.

Any ideas? This is the only Windows based VM I have running. The rest are Linux so I'm having no issues with those. I'm kinda "stuck" here and don't really know why VMware tools is installed but not running...

I haven't checked Event Viewer because I'm so darn new to Windows server I didn't think about it. Come from Unix/Linux background. I'll go check. Is there any place in particular that VMware tools would be located within Event Viewer?

I can offer this. Some backup solutions have their own agents that install on the Windows OS of the Guest systems. A lot of these conflict with the snapshot provider that VMtools uses. In the past I have had to re-run the VMware tools setup and deselect the VMware snapshot provider to get backups to start working again. Do you know if your backup solution uses its own agent or VMWare's snapshot provider?

Have no idea why the bug exists in VMware tools 10.0.6 because according to this Opens a new window handy dandy chart, that is supposed to be the correct version of VMware tools to run for my ESXi build (3620759) while 10.1.0 is for upcoming ESXi 6.5. Oh well. Whatever works! The release notes say that 10.1.0 is backwards compatible so hopefully no other issues arise.

Therefore, if the utils vmtools status is showing No Further Actions Needed and still the VM running on the ESXi host is not showing the correct status, then try a restart of the ESXi host as the problem seems to be with that and not on UCCX.

The question here is if the setting in vm-tools in any way affects the CV backup or if that setting is for something else completely and maybe even ignored. If it has an affect it would be interesting to know what that is and if I should recommend the customer to remove it.

So during an FS & Application consistent backup there is no integration with vmtools and VSS during the VADP initiated quiesce? Basically the vmtool setting to disable application quiesce is overridden by the VMware VADP-initiated, quiesced backup?

2-After doing all that it will reboot and it will ask you to type ./amp-amp install but if you hit that it will tell you to please install the VMWare tools before continue... so before doing that do this:

I want to perform a backup and replication of the VM, using Veeam. When VMware tools are installed, the VM can be quiesced, so that the backup/replica is in a consistent state, should I ever need to use them.

I have the same config as topic starter. I also would like to backup the FortiMail VM using Veeam, therefore the use of VMWare tools is a necessity. Also on behalf of the topic starter I would like to repeat the question: are there any guidelines as to how to install VMWare tools on the Fortimail VM?

OK Figured it out. There's indeed no need to install VMWare tools on the FortiMail VM. I just needed to change a setting on the job itself: apart from disabeling VMWare tools quiescence I also disabled application-aware processing. Backup job now runs fine!

because it depends on the host and performances. Pointless to use anything else.

The guest anyway is not designed to be changed at a kernel level for those kind of tools to interact with the host, at least seems so.

Verify the VMware tools version after upgrading, you can use the vmware-toolbox-cmd -v command. The version should show as 10.3.25.1451 (build-20206839). You can also check the version in the vSphere client, where it should show as 10360 (Current).

VMware tools are specialized drivers for virtual hardware that is installed in the UC applications when they are running virtualized. It is important that the VMware tools version running in the UC application be in sync with the version of ESXi used. If the VMware tools status does not show "OK" from the viClient, the VMware tools must be upgraded.

It is important to understand that the UC application is not tied to the version of ESXi on which it is running. For example, initial deployment of the OVA and UC application may have been done on ESXi 4.0 update 1. Then, at a later time, you may upgrade the ESXi software to version 4.1 or migrate to a host running virtualization software VMware ESXi 4.1 or version 5.0. Once running on the different ESXi version, you will need to upgrade the VMware tools running in your UC application in order to match the host on which it is running. Software upgrades of the UC application will preserve the version of VMware tools currently running.

Note: This command updates the currently installed VMware tools to the latest version prescribed by the ESXi host for that VM. The system reboots twice. Monitor the virtual machine console from the vSphere Client in order to see the system status.

After installation of the new version of VMware tools is complete, remove the VMware tools tar file from the virtual CD/DVD drive. Typically, the VMware tools tar file is called linux.iso. In order to remove the VMware Tools tar file, complete these steps:

we are testing vmware on prime machine to cloud using ASR, the vm failed over to cloud but unable to fail back to on prim. subsequently deleted the cloud vm and started on prim vm and uninstalled mobility client etc, but the machine shows on ASR as "VMware tools are not installed for the selected VM" and unable to select for replication. the machine cloned with different SID still same. How we can clear any residual configuration data and start replicate again..

Looking at the issue description, i understand that the previous ASR replication flow has been broken post failover, the failback workflow was not followed as per the recommended steps available in ASR failback document : -us/azure/site-recovery/vmware-azure-prepare-failback, which landed it in this issue.

Glad to know you are able to replicate the VM by manually installing the agent and enabled protection.

For the second issue, where you are unable to install the Process Server on Azure for failback scenario, assuming you are following the procedure from -us/azure/site-recovery/vmware-azure-set-up-process-server-azure#deploy-a-process-server-in-azure

to deploy the failback process server.

For every other OVA file I have pulled into ESXi, vmware tools has already been installed by the maker of the OVA or in one case I was able to get to the linux command line and install vmware tools myself

Request for integrating VMware tools will have to be made to the Developers. There may be plans to integrate the VMware tools in the iLO Amplifier pack in future based on the requirement, however there is no ETA on it for now. 2351a5e196
