The group's goal is to end a curse on Jumanji, brought about by corrupt archaeologist Professor Van Pelt[b] after he stole a magical jewel called the "Jaguar's Eye" and gained control of the jungle's animals. The film's complete title, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, was confirmed in Cinemacon 2017 held in March. Its plot involved teenagers cleaning out a school's basement who find a vintage video-game version of Jumanji and are sucked into the first film's jungle setting. Although fans debated whether the film was a sequel or a reboot, the second trailer (released that September) indicated that the sequel is set 21 years after the first. I recently watched Jumanji Welcome to the jungle and it bothered me how the players kept their memories of the game despite the original showing only Alan and Sarah* keeping their memories. It goes so far as to show the kids not recognizing the adults when they finally "actually" meet after the game ends. I suggest a simple reason for the change:

The dead can't play the game and Jumanji wants desperately to be played. So most probably points 1 and 2 will be the consequences. After all in the first part Alan survived the jungle without survival instincts and the guy who was hunting him somehow never hit him.
The main conceit of the video game style is of course to give the teenage characters the different bodies of their avatars in the game world, from where the hilarity will ensue. Unfortunately, this means establishing the teenage characters first, so we have to suffer through the laziest and most boring teenage character stereotypes they could manage. It's like no one cared about any of this and just wanted to get to the jungle stuff. In fact, all the emotional storylines that derive from the teenagers feel half-arsed and have just been put there to break up the action pieces.
The jungle world of Jumanji is well established and beautifully envisioned. The effects are solid enough for a comic caper such as this and the antagonist has just about enough backstory to give us reason to legitimately fear him. There isn't much in the way of supporting characters but the likes of Rhys Darby and Nick Jonas do everything that is asked of them without too much fuss.
Compared to the original film, which I remember fondly, this new instalment also lacks bite and much of a consistent aesthetic. Reviews of the original Jumanji chastised its dark and menacing content relative to its young audience. I relish those twisted overtones. Welcome to the Jungle is much more frivolous and chipper with a lot of the distinctive threat sanded off. The sinister tone of the original also dovetailed with its well-executed world-building as the dark jungle full of ravenous lions, deadly plants, quicksand, and Freudian big game hunters invaded reality. Here, we get some characters that harken back to that very loosely, but overlaid with clashing modern musical accompaniment, bizarre heavy metal bikers, and crashing around in helicopters.
