In the wake of the Great Recession of 2009, there has been a good deal of focus on employment statistics, one of the most important metrics policymakers use to gauge the overall strength of the economy. In the United States, the government measures unemployment using the Current Population Survey (CPS), which collects demographic and employment information from a wide range of Americans each month. The observations in the data set represent people surveyed in the September 2013 CPS who actually completed a survey.
Observation: Let's first understand that data has been collected from which individuals. The above graph provides us with the race of the interviewees, on the basis of which we can figure out the type of population spread that United States has.
Conclusion: As we can see that "White" people have dominance over the population it can be assumed that they are the ones who might have been affected to greater extend due to this recession.
Observation: The most important aspect to consider the age group to which the interview belongs to. Accordingly it can be decided whether or not the individual was capable of working and therefore, is able to work or not.
Conclusion: Infants have the range "0-14", Teenagers belong to "15-29", Adults are in between "30-49", Senior Citizen are categorized for the group "50-64" and thereafter comes the retired population who's age is 65 and above . This graph depicts the distribution of our data over 5 bins.
Observation: Having a look at macro level, considering different regions of the united states, as to what is the status of employment infers which part of the country was most and least affected.
Conclusion: As it can be seen, that no.of individual which were employed and unemployed both are maximum for the south region. Other categories have almost equal spread over all the regions.
Observation: This is a state wise distribution of employment status of the interviewees. For the states to be highlighted, only the range of employed individuals are considered.
Conclusion: It is evident that the states of Texas and Florida are making up for the south region of America as the highest no.of employed individuals during the survey. This is followed by California for western region and then couple of states in the east.
Observation: Probably the most important reason which decides whether an individual will be in which state of employment is EDUCATION! There exists a direct relationship between the level of education and employment.
Conclusion: From the interviewees, the individuals which have completed high school are the ones who are still employed. Following is the order of individuals that are EMPLOYED:
High School > Bachelor's > College > Associate > Master's > No High School Diploma > Doctorate > Pro Certification.
Following is the order of individuals that are UNEMPLOYED:
High School > College > No High School Diploma > Bachelor's > Associate > Master's > Pro Certification > Doctorate.
Observation: On the basis of gender, it is vital to have a look at different occupations that were acquired by the individuals.
Conclusion: Most of the fields are equally dominated by male and female. But the job wherein females are distinctively more in numbers as compared to males is Educational and Health Services. Similarly the count of males are more in Construction and Manufacturing than females.
Observation: Assuming the fact, that a married individual will be the one most affected due to unemployment as the person would have a family to look after. This is not the case for people who are Divorced, Separated, Widowed or never Married. The total shows the count of individuals which were interviewed in that category.
Conclusion: Only 35% of total unemployed and 57% of employed were married.
