OVERVIEW
Been Map does not require an account, and we do not sell personal information. You mark the countries, regions, and cities you have visited, lived in, passed through, or want to visit, and the app colours your map and counts them. Everything is entered by you; the app does not detect where you are. The map, country, region, and city data are bundled with the app (city data from GeoNames, CC BY 4.0). Your places, visits, and notes are stored locally on your device. The app also uses Google services for analytics, crash reporting, remote configuration, and advertising.
INFORMATION STORED ON YOUR DEVICE
The app stores:
- up to 3,000 places (countries, regions, and cities or your own pins), each with the status you set (visited, lived, transit, or want to go), a note (up to 500 characters), and up to 300 visits. A visit has an optional date (year, month, or exact day) and a note (up to 500 characters);
- up to 1,000 pins: cities you add from the bundled list, or your own places with a name (up to 60 characters), the latitude and longitude you type, and the country you choose;
- your wishlist order, your counting settings, and how many changes you made since your last backup export and when you last exported;
- a small record (an ID and a time) for each visit or pin you delete, so that combining an older backup file does not bring it back.
The app keeps automatic copies of this data on the device: one from each of the 3 most recent days on which you made changes, and a copy made before any restore or "Replace my map" import. If saved data is found to be damaged, a copy of it is also kept on the device so it is not silently lost.
The app may also store basic operating information such as app-use count, whether the review prompt was shown, and cached advertising or More Apps configuration.
The developer does not run a server that receives your map. The app reads developer-controlled advertising settings and a More Apps list from Google Cloud Firestore, and loads the More Apps icons from their web addresses; it does not upload your places, visits, notes, or pins.
BACKUP FILES AND SHARING
When you choose "Export backup file" in the Backup page of the menu, the app writes a file containing your whole map (places, visits, notes, pins, wishlist, and settings) to its temporary storage and opens your device's share sheet; you decide where the file goes (for example Files, a cloud drive, or e-mail). Anyone who receives that file can read its contents. When you choose "Import backup file", the app reads only the file you pick (up to 5 MB), shows what it contains, and lets you combine it with your map or replace your map.
When you tap "Share my map" or share a year on the Stats screen, the app draws an image of your map with your counts, saves it as a temporary file, and passes it to the share sheet. The app does not send it anywhere itself.
ANALYTICS, CRASH REPORTING, AND ADS
Google Firebase Analytics may process limited app-usage and technical information, such as app launches, session counts, tab and menu interactions, your answer to the iOS tracking prompt, app version, device type, and app-instance identifiers. When you set a status, an event records the kind of place (country, region, or pin) and the status chosen (visited, lived, transit, want to go, or cleared); it does not record which place. Exporting, combining, or replacing from a backup file and sharing your map are also recorded, without their contents. Events do not include place names, dates, notes, or coordinates. Ad revenue events record the ad format and the reported value and currency.
Google Firebase Crashlytics may process crash reports and related technical information needed to diagnose app problems.
The app shows ads through Google AdMob. Google may process advertising identifiers and device, app, consent, network, and ad-performance information to provide and measure ads, and may use an IP address to estimate an approximate location even though the app has no location permission.
Banner ads appear on the Places, Stats, and Wishlist screens, not on the Map screen. A full-screen ad may appear after you close the sheet of a place you have just marked visited or lived for the first time, but not if you have done anything else since, and not while a sheet, editor, menu, backup or share flow, save, or consent message is open. An app-open ad may appear when the app starts; when you return to the app it is shown only if none of those is in progress. On Android, the exit dialog may show an ad.
PERMISSIONS AND ADVERTISING CHOICES
The app does not request any feature permissions: no location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, Bluetooth, health data, or notifications. Backup files are opened through the system file picker, which gives the app access only to the file you choose.
Where required (for example in the EEA and UK), Google's consent message (UMP) is shown first, and in those regions personalized advertising stays off unless your choice allows it. On iOS, the App Tracking Transparency prompt is shown only after that step and only when personalized advertising is allowed. If tracking is not allowed, the IDFA is not available to the app or its ad partners. If the consent message cannot be loaded, the app may still show non-personalized ads and does not ask for tracking permission. The app works whatever you choose.
You can change tracking permission in your device Settings at any time. Where Google requires it, the app menu shows "Privacy choices", which reopens the consent message so you can change your advertising choice. The menu's "Privacy policy" page shows a short summary of this policy.
STORAGE AND YOUR CONTROL
In a place's sheet you can clear its status (tap the selected status again), edit or clear its note, delete individual visits, and delete a city or your own pin. You can also clear the app's data on Android or delete the app. Deleted data can remain in the automatic copies described above: daily copies are replaced by newer ones, while copies made before a restore or replace, or of damaged data, stay on the device until you clear the app's data or delete the app (the app has no button to delete them individually). The small deletion records also stay until then. Backup files you exported are outside the app, so delete them where you saved them. Local data may be included in an Apple, Google, or device backup depending on your backup settings; uninstalling normally removes the active copy but may not remove an older backup.
Because we do not receive your map, we cannot delete it for you; the controls above remove data from your device. For questions about data processed by Google, or to ask us for help with a privacy request, contact us at the address below.
Data processed by Google is retained according to its service settings and policies:
- Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Firebase privacy information: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Google advertising technologies: https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads
We use these services under their applicable terms, and we ensure that third-party service providers with whom we share user data provide the same or equal protection of that data as stated in this policy.
SECURITY
Your saved data is kept in the app's private storage on your device, which the operating system protects from other apps; it is not separately encrypted by the app, so protect your device with a passcode. Exported backup files and shared images are not encrypted; keep them somewhere you trust. Apart from the limited analytics events described above and the files and images you choose to share, the app does not upload your saved data. Communication between the app and Google services uses encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we limit what the app collects to what is described in this policy.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Country counts depend on the counting rule you choose, and borders, region lists, and names follow the bundled data, which may differ from official or local views and does not express any position on disputed territories. Area and other statistics are approximate. The app is a personal record, not proof of travel.
CHILDREN
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
CHANGES
We may update this policy if the app or its services change. The date above shows the latest revision.
