When you select one of the found master shapes in the Local results, and drag it onto the page, a copy of the master shape is first added to the Document Stencil. You can drag and drop this master shape from there subsequently, rather than searching for it again.

The search also checks the Keywords of the shapes. For example, searching for the word "Tile" appears to mistakenly match with "Square stone", however, an examination of the Keywords of the master shape reveals that it does contain the word "tile".

Editions of Microsoft Visio that have an online subscription also have the ability to search for shapes in a number of third party stencils hosted by Microsoft. For example, searching for the word "Tile" shows that it is also found in an online stencil, which can then be selected and downloaded. This will download the whole stencil in your My Shapes folder in a sub-folder named after the third-party provider. These stencils, and all of the master shapes within them, are immediately available to use in the current and subsequent sessions. These stencils have been vetted by Microsoft and are safe to use.

Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs) Visio MVPs are Visio experts who freely answer questions and offer solutions, tips, and suggestions, most often in the Visio discussion groups. You can find often stencils of shapes on their web sites.

For example, if you enter "office chair" as a search in the Shapes window, the search can be for shapes that are related to both "office" and "chair," or for shapes that are related to either "office" or "chair" (or both).

After you download a stencil of shapes, copy it to your My Shapes folder. By default, your My Shapes folder is located inside your default Documents folder. Then, open the stencil in Visio by navigating to My Shapes.

There are many diagrams and shapes in Visio for the web. To locate a certain diagram or shape, you can search for them. Type in a word or phrase to find diagram names, shapes, or the names, text, and shape data associated with a diagram.

You can search for specific shapes that you want to add to the diagram. For example, you may want to search for specific shapes not in a stencil, such as title boxes, arrows, math, charts, boxes, stars, and symbols.

You can create alternative text (Alt text) for shapes, pictures, charts, SmartArt graphics, or other objects in your Microsoft 365 documents. Alt text helps people with visual disabilities understand pictures and other graphical content. When someone using a screen reader comes across a picture in a document, they will hear the alt text describing the picture; without alt text, they will only know they've reached a picture without knowing what the picture shows.

Stencils contain collections of related shapes. For example, in a workflow template there is a stencil that contains all the work flow shapes, another that contains work flow steps, and a stencil with a collection of arrow shapes to indicate direction. In a home planning template, there is a stencil for walls, one for furniture, one for garden accessories, and so on.

The title bars always stay at the top of the Shapes window, but if there are several, they can be hidden to leave room to display the shapes. If stencil title bars are hidden, a scroll bar appears next to the title bars so you can scroll through them.

You can extend the title bar area to show more of the title bars by clicking the border between the titles and the shapes, dragging it downward, and releasing the mouse button when the border is where you want it.

Even with the Shapes window minimized, you can drag shapes onto your diagram or drawing, as well as change stencils and browse for more stencils by clicking the Stencil icon () at the top of the minimized window.

I am Visio 2013 user. How can I add more auto-connection points on shapes in Visio. For example, a circle shape originally has 8 auto-connection points, but I need 8 points more totally 16 connection points around it.

I had the same problem with Visio 2016. I have the standard license. I think it is very strange that you can select a "UML Sequence" template when you search for it but it then opens a blank canvas without shapes. So you don't see anything and can't select the shapes under the "More Shapes" window on the side.

So I searched the shapes in the installation directory of Visio. I found in the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\Visio Content\1033 a couple of Sequence diagram templates (ie: BASIC_UMLSEQUENCE_M.VSTX). They are using the stencil USEQME_M.vssx. I found that out by right clicking the shapes in the left window and select "Save as". I saved them in "My Documents" under "My Shapes" just like custom shapes. I can than use them in any new document that I want.

I really like how visio has almost all of the stencils I need, which allows me to properly build out the racks (front and back), that is a big win. However, I'm trying to build a network diagram showing all the switches in the network (redundancy, multiple buildings, fiber, copper, etc....and the connector feature is driving me insane, it never wants to link things properly and automatically builds its own path often adding un-necessary 90s and overlapping of other lines.
