Lieutenant Commissioner (hon.) Dr (hon.) Derrick Robinson, DD(Hum) h.c. is celebrated for his years of service in promoting Jamaican culture as a CariFolk singer and his over 20-years service in bringing the legacy and heroism of Chief Takyi (Chief Tacky) to national prominence with his barefooted all-island walks. For over 20 years, Derrick created a 'moral spectacle', grabbing the attention of news headlines, and lobbied consistently for Chief Takyi to be made a national hero, resulting in so far; the renaming of the St. Mary Parish Awards to the Chief Takyi Awards, the renaming of Rectory Street in Port Maria to the Chief Takyi Street, and the Declaration of April 8 as Takyi Day by Governor General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, and Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange.
Derrick Robinson is also recognized and celebrated for his four years of dedicated service on the Board of Directors of the Ranger Cadet Combined Corps (RCC) in its early years after inception, for which he received Honorary Commission to the rank of Honorary Colonel and was subsequently elevated to the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Commissioner. He was also awarded by the Seminary of the Temple of the Tao of Christ Ministries in association with the Abide University and Universal Life Church Monastery with a Doctor of Divinity in Humanities honoris causa for his work in cultural preservation, youth development through the RCC, volunteer ministry as a Minister of Humanity with the Temple of the Tao of Christ Ministries, and his work in local government through dedicated voluntary service with the St. Mary Municipal Corporation.
As a patriotic citizen and parishioner, Derrick has served consistently on three committees of the St. Mary Municipal Corporation (St. Mary Parish Council).
