So I've been having some trouble finding an appropriate starting point for my faders on drums in an EDM project I'm working on. A little background info - The band is using virtual drum presets and I've already achieved a very "real" sound using humanizing and velocity adjustments. My issue is with the punch of the drums. I usually set the Kick fader first, so it does not peak above -10db (to allow for headroom elsewhere in the project). I mix the rest of the drums to match up with kick. The main problem I'm having, for an example, is let's say I set the snare fader to reach a peak level of -11 (just under the kick). It mixes well and there's a good kick/snare relationship, but everything still lacks punch. In order to really hear the full spectrum of the virtual snare sound, I would have to raise the fader so it peaks around -7db. This completely knocks off the snare/kick relationship and bringing up the kick to peak at -7 as well kills the headroom when all other instruments (mixed under the level of the kick) join the mix. I've heard different things, like leave the master bus fader at full unity (0.0db) and I've also heard it's ok to drop the master bus to allow for headroom right before mixing down (I don't feel comfortable with the latter option though). I'd much rather adjust the individual instrument faders so that the entire mix never exceeds -3 or -4db on the master bus. Trying to achieve this seems like a futile effort, as even when the drums are fully mixed and still lacking a certain pop or punch, they take up a lot of headroom, usually peaking the mix bus at -4db already, not leaving much room for the rest of the project. If I go below my normal -10 peak threshold for kick/snare, it just looses all of its punch and quality. I know virtual instruments have the best quality at full unity (0.0db) but without sliding the master bus down to accommodate for that, the project clips all over the place. I've messed around with EQ and compression, but everything I add or have tried (like sidechaining and parallel compression) just ends up kicking up the peak volume anyway (shooting up the kick for example from a peak of -10db to -6db), forcing me to bring the channel fader down to compensate, and again losing whatever quality and dynamic I just achieved with compression and EQ. My last ditch effort could be to just mix the drums to a 0.0db peak so I get the clarity I want out of the sounds, mix the rest of the music/instruments to taste, deal with NO headroom while I'm mixing and then at the end, drop the master bus fader so the whole project doesn't exceed -4 or -3db. But, I'm afraid to try it, as that is a WHOLE wasted mix if it doesn't work and I've been told to shy away from adjusting the master bus to anything under 0.0db. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I want to be as clear as possible. Any help is much appreciated. (This is also before any effects bussing or sending the drums to a bus to control overall volume - this is simply a dry, initial fader mix where I can't seem to achieve the "in-your-face" vibe that the drums need without sacrificing a TON of headroom).

However, when you work with virtual drums and you program them the right way, you can end up with very good results. And when I have to deal with a virtual drum recording that I need to mix, something that I like to do is to mix them as I would mix an acoustic drum.

But can also be done on any virtual drum instruments. Like, for example, if I go back one step and I use this one. Now, this is a and instants of battery, and this is what I did on this instrument as well. I had to just right click on the samples and route them into their own outputs. Okay? And if I go on the right side of a battery, I have my activate outputs and all of my extra outputs are activated. I actually set that up manually. And by activating all those outputs first and then routing them from the virtual instruments, there you go.

This topic has been often discussed. Good news! THERE IS an acoustic virtual drum Auv3, with multi out ( 16 instruments ) very easy to use in any Auv3 host like AUM, Cubasis, Audiobus, etc...

And it is free.

Thanks, just checked. Seems like a pain to use as auv3. Regular sampler is dull, always an option of course but not as interesting. Tried digistix 2 and other 4P app - no sorry, that dev is not for me. I hope for Yonac, some drums would be great to accompany steel guitar pro.

Are we back on this again? GarageBand has drums. LOTS of drums and percussion. The desktop version of their Drummer software is more capable, but the iOS version is pretty good compared to all of the competition. And the best part? You already own GarageBand if you have an iOS or macOS device/computer.

The Master section gives you more detailed control over the global mix. It allows you to select and adjust the Reverb, while also offering you a Color control and a Maximizer to further beef up your drums.

Total newbie here. I'm just trying to get the virtual instruments packaged with the new Cakewalk to record, such as Drum Kit 1. I open a new project, select Basic. I select "Insert" then "Soft Synth" and Drums, and SI-Drum Kit. This adds a track and assigns a default midi port. I can bring up the kit, select a sample pattern and loop it. I hear it in my headphones, and I see sound bars in the drum and master mix channels. I arm the drum track to record, then hit the main record button (set to overwrite). There is an active sound bar in the drum track and I hear the drums, but I do not see any sound patterns on the track itself, and there is nothing after I hit the stop button and attempt the play button. e24fc04721
