Virginie de Barnier

She holds degrees in both marketing (PhD, HDR, French “Agrégation”, MBA and Master’s degree) and psychology (Bachelor and Master’s Degrees). Previously, she worked 8 years with HAVAS COMMUNICATION, an international advertising agency, as an account manager and later as the marketing director. She then joined EDHEC Business School for 12 years as a professor of marketing, serving as director of the marketing department. After obtaining her French “Agrégation de l'enseignement supérieur” (equivalent to tenure track) she joined the Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management – IAE as a full tenured professor in 2007. She served there as a professor and director of the Marketing & Brand Management Master’s Programme from 2007 to 2013, than as a Dean of the IAE from 2013 to 2020. She was appointed as Vice-President in charge of the AMU Foundation in July 2020.

Her research interests focus on the links between psychology and marketing, luxury brand management, creativity, emotional impact on consumer behaviour and communication. In addition to having written 4 books and 12 book chapters, she has published 30 articles in academically ranked international journals. She supervised 10 doctoral students to completion, participated to 29 PhD and HDR defences and supervises today 6 doctoral students working on luxury branding and communication issues .

HONORS, AWARDS & DISTINCTIONS

2020 : Ordre des Palmes académiques. The Ordre des Palmes académiques (French for "Order of Academic Palms") is a national order bestowed by the French Republic to distinguished academics and figures in the world of culture and education. It was originally established in 1808 by Emperor Napoleon as a decoration to honour eminent members of the University.

2019 : Scholarship from The Case Centre for the case study « Les calissons du Roy René » cowritten with Pecot F. The package includes financial support of £1,000 and a free place on one of their expert-led case writing workshops.

2017: Best Doctoral Dissertation Award from Aix-Marseille University for Pecot F. doctoral work written under my supervision.

2015-2019: Research funding contract with the city Aix-en-Provence to develop research on city branding. Funding of 40,000 Euros.
