Virginia Sánchez-Marcos is Professor of Economics at Universidad de Cantabria and Research Fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). She received her PhD in Economics from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in 2002. 

Her research focuses on family and labor economics. She mainly uses quantitative dynamic models with idiosyncratic uncertainty as a laboratory to understand economic decisions. Among other things, she has extensively studied the determinants of female labor supply over the life-cycle and the causes of the low fertility rate in Spain.  She is also interested in understanding gender inequality in labour market outcomes and household income inequality.

She was the Editor-in-Chief of SERIEs-Journal of the Spanish Economic Association from 2018 to 2023.  In 2018 she was the President of the Committee on the Situation of Women in Economics of the Spanish Economic Association (COSME). From 2018 to 2021, she was Coordinator in the area of Economics of the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación) .

She co-organizes the Macroeconomics of Labor Markets Workshop at the BGSE Summer Forum.
