So far I'm enjoying Need For speed Most Wanted on Origin. But the thing that kills me...and it may just be me being a moron...but I can't seem to find a full screen option. Is it just not there or do I need to go into the games files?

In summary, Criterion's latest racer takes the advanced lighting of its predecessor, improves upon it still further and once again builds up a varied sandbox world around the premise of the original Need for Speed: Most Wanted. But much like DICE's Battlefield 3, it's the PC version of Most Wanted that ultimately serves as the reference point for technical design - even though powerful kit is required to show this game running at its absolute best. The console versions run at graphical settings equivalent to the PC's lowest in most regards, most noticeably with the pixellated alpha effects that crop up. The PS3 and 360 offerings are eminently playable, but more than ever, the challenges Criterion faced in fulfilling the game's visual potential shows a need for fresh, new console hardware.

Despite the addition of police to the mix, avoiding the cops in non-barricade events isn't too difficult, primarily because there really aren't that many of them. Unlike in the console game, which constantly ramps up the law enforcement's numbers until you're being chased by dozens of cop cars and a police helicopter, you'll only find yourself being followed by as many as two police cars at any given time in the DS version. They'll give chase when your car's "heat level" is high enough. Heat level is an indicator of your wanted status and is increased by bumping into other cars, trashing street signs, and speeding past police cruisers. When your heat level is maxed out, the police try to knock you off the road or lay down a spike strip ahead of you. If you finish a race with your heat level filled, you can also challenge the cops to a double down race, which gives you the chance to wager that event's earnings on a one-lap face off. Ironically, should you happen to get busted, the only punishment you'll face is the few seconds you'll lose getting back up to speed in the race. You can also "get out" of the bust by participating in one of two minigames, either four-card monte or a tire-spinning contest. Both minigames use the touch screen. That's the full extent of the so-called police presence in the DS version.

The racing itself is generic and plain, which wouldn't be so bad except that there are also various problems that crop up frequently to inject needless frustration into the game. Most events place you with three opponents out on the course, along with a few cops and dozens of innocent commuter vehicles. Each course is a good length, and most have a shortcut or two. The cars, in general, all feel heavy and mostly handle the way they should. You don't have to worry about the nitro boosts or slow-motion cameras that the console and PlayStation Portable versions of the game have, since they weren't implemented in the DS version. You'll want to take first in every race so that you can unlock additional car upgrades and boss challenges, and you'll probably end up replaying some races multiple times in order to do so. Obviously, getting nabbed by the cops or colliding with commuter cars will slow you down, as will nudging into or smacking into walls. Unfortunately, the controls tend to oversteer, so it's easy to smack into cars, walls, and everything else. To make matters worse, the game's collision physics are unforgiving. Run into or rub sides with any other vehicle, opponent or otherwise, and you'll be pushed backward every time. Meanwhile, the CPU can often pass through oncoming traffic and always gets a helpful boost whenever you so much as bump fenders. Needless to say, racing on tight roadways isn't fun.

The Xbox 360 version of the game is a little hitchy, with an unstable frame rate that takes supreme dives whenever there are a lot of cop cars on-screen. It also looks a little blurry at the horizon, which in a game where dodging oncoming traffic at insane speeds is the order of the day can cause some issues of its own. The PC version, predictably, has none of these issues. It looks great at high resolutions and, assuming you've got a machine that can handle it, the frame rate is terrific. Ultimately, though, this is a multiplayer game that you'll enjoy most with friends, and you should probably play it where your friends will play it... just try to convince them all that the PC version is the way to go, if you hold that sort of sway over your peers.

To actually get away, you'll need to get out of visual range...and stay there. The initial evasion changes the meter over to a cooldown meter. You'll have to lay low and wait for that meter to fill up to end the chase. This is probably the tensest part of the entire chase, because you never know when two cops might blow around the corner and spot you, starting the whole process over again. It all sort of works like some sort of strange, wonderful cross between Grand Theft Auto's open city and Metal Gear Solid's stealth mechanic. All the while, you'll be acquiring heat on your car. This means that you'll have to keep a couple of cars around, because acquiring heat on one car lowers the heat on the others. Also, getting busted too many times can result in your car getting impounded, though you can avoid that by resetting the system whenever you get caught (if that's more your speed).

The game's subtitle alludes to a list of Fairhaven's ten "most wanted" racers, and you'll have to work your way up by challenging the other drivers for their spots. Once you've beaten them on the track, you'll need to take them out for good to earn their rides. These races act like boss battles, with superpowered concept cars that require finesse and fast wheels to outrun, and are a thrill to drive once you get your hands on them.

Your climb up the wanted list is perhaps the most structured part of this largely freeform game, and the open-world philosophy extends to vehicle selection, too; most cars are yours right from the start, while others become available as you find them hidden around town at 'Jack Spots'. There's a huge collection of licensed cars to chose from, including modified sedans and coupes, classic objects of desire like Porches, Maseratis, and Lamborghinis, and even the all-electric Tesla Roadster.
