Mayor Releases Statement Regarding Closure of the Rutland Post Office

RUTLAND, Ohio — Mayor Tyler M. Eblin has released the following statement regarding the closure of the Rutland Post Office:

The Rutland Mayor’s Office is aware of the impending closure of the Rutland Post Office. According to a public announcement released by the United States Postal Service, the Rutland Post Office “has failed all inspections”, warranting its last day of business on July 10, 2026.

Through this statement, the Mayor’s Office is confirming that no inspection has been completed by the Village of Rutland Building Department, and that any inspections indicating structural failure are the result of inspections completed either by the U.S. Postal Service, or a third party. Further, neither the Mayor’s Office, nor the Building Department, were formally notified of any structural issues which may or may not have been present prior to today’s statement.

The closure of the Rutland Post Office is a disheartening moment for not only Rutland, but for surrounding communities who rely on the close proximity, convenience and accessibility of the Rutland facility to conduct business via U.S. mail. Furthermore, a public notice provided less than two weeks prior to the facility’s closure date only burdens postal customers with uncertainty and the need to scramble to find an alternative means to receive and send mail. Taking into consideration a number of postal customers who are elderly or on fixed incomes, the difficulty in installing a mailbox or relocating a post office box in such a short period of time only further exacerbates the uncertainty.

The Mayor’s Office recognizes the utmost importance of the Rutland Post Office and is today announcing its commitment to appealing to the U.S. Postal Service to ensure the Rutland Post Office can receive the repairs warranted and remain functional for not only Rutland, but western Meigs County as a whole. In the alternative, as an absolute last resort, the Mayor’s Office will work in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service to provide an alternative space for post office boxes to ensure they can remain inside the Village of Rutland.

The Village of Rutland understands the importance of the safety of USPS workers at the Rutland Post Office and understands a suspension in services may be necessary until remediations are completed; however, a permanent closure of the Rutland Post Office is unacceptable, and I am strongly urging the United States Postal Service to reverse its decision.
