Hi there!
My name is Katie Barrus. I am a certified birth doula, childbirth educator, and birth assistant with Mother Nurtured Midwifery. I've been a birth doula in Bloomington, Indiana since 2019. I have attended over 30 births, in my role as doula or birth assistant, and have experience with both home and hospital births.
While I was completing my training as a doctoral student in the field of criminology, I gave birth to my first son and experienced a long, challenging labor, followed by postpartum anxiety and breastfeeding struggles. Throughout this difficult experience I found my true calling in birthwork. I am extremely passionate about supporting families of all backgrounds as they experience the transition into parenthood, whether for the first or tenth time.

August 2024: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
August 2023: Joined Mother Nurtured Midwifery as a birth assistant for Michelle Ingram de Oliveira, CPM
July 2023: Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP) certification
March 2023: Adult/Pediatric CPR certification
February 2023: Joined Tandem Birth Center and Postpartum House as a perinatal educator
December 2022: Completed the Evidence Based Birth® Instructor training program, becoming the only EBB® instructor in Indiana
July 2022: Holistic Birth Doula certification through The Matrona
January 2021: Completed the When Survivors Give Birth: Understanding and Healing the Effects of Early Sexual Abuse on Childbearing Women introductory training with Penny Simkin, Phyllis Klaus, and Selena Shelley
December 2020: Completed the Birth Monopoly Know Your Rights: Legal and Human Rights in Childbirth for Birth Professionals and Advocates course
September-October 2020: Participated in the MARA Community Postpartum Support Program
July 2020: Attended local Maternal Advocates Resource Alliance (MARA) workshop with Dr. Abegunde entitled, “Listening for Birth Advocates: Do You Hear What I Hear?”
August 2019: Attended first birth as a birth doula
June 2019: Attended DONA-approved Birth Doula workshop with Molly Mendota
