The Ohio State University has selected Jason Lemon as its inaugural vice provost and dean for online learning. Lemon currently serves as vice provost and dean of the University of Cincinnati (UC) Online. He will begin his appointment on July 6.

Jona has deep expertise in the fields of computer science, online learning, curriculum design, and education, and has worked at the forefront of learning science and learning technologies for more than 25 years. He applies insights from cognitive and learning sciences to the design of online, blended, and hybrid courses with a focus on enhancing quality, access, and equity. Jona is coming to us from Northeastern University in Boston, where he serves as assistant vice chancellor for digital innovation and enterprise learning. He has been PI or co-PI on over $15 million in federal grants while at Northeastern and will bring some current grants with him to UVA.

Previously, Jona was a research professor and administrator in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he led research and development projects advancing STEM education. He developed new learning technologies, including tools for online science and remote labs, and new interest-driven approaches to engage youth in STEM and STEAM. He was the founding director of the Northwestern University Office of STEM Education Partnerships, which connects the university with the K-12 community.

Jona has also worked with Carnegie Mellon and Cornell universities, and is an advisor and consultant to industry, nonprofits, school districts, and federal, state, and local agencies on the future of work and learning, talent strategy, and employer-higher education partnerships. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 articles, book chapters, conference presentations, and reports on learning technologies, STEM education, and online and blended learning. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Northwestern University and did his undergraduate work in computer science and psychology at the University of Wisconsin.

Matt has held leadership positions at MSU Denver, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Colorado State University, and Arizona State University shaping the strategy for online learning as well as the use of technology in teaching and student services across the institution. He holds a Doctor of Education in higher and postsecondary education from Arizona State University; a Master of Science in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Ohio University.


While at MSU Denver, UW-Madison, CSU Online, and ASU Matt expanded access to learners who, either because of their schedule or distance from campus, were unable to complete location-based programs. As a result, students from across the globe have reached their educational goals within more than 100 newly-available online and hybrid learning experiences. More than a collection of online courses, program development includes implementation of best practices related to course design, faculty training, program development, the enrollment funnel, marketing, assessment, and data reporting. This collection of efforts results in programs greater than the sum of their parts which meaningfully contribute to the mission of the institution and deliver equivalent learning outcomes to in-person programs, and they will be the foundation for every new and existing online program at the University of Wyoming.

Guidelines issued from the U.S. Department of Education went into effect on July 1, 2021. She has served in the roles of director, dean and vice president of online or digital learning at higher education institutions but also has experience leading departments of advising, enrollment, marketing, instructional design, academic technology, academic support, and disability and accessibility services. Her leadership has led to outcomes such as record enrollments, increased diversity hires, inclusive curriculum, appreciative online advising, benchmark massive open online courses design, online multilingual curriculum, remote video production, in-demand online labs and inclusive marketing campaigns.

Esther Meijer Lahargoue interviews Dec. 9. Meijer Lahargoue has served as the chief executive officer of EDUKAN, an online education consortium, for the last six years, overseeing the curriculum development, technical delivery and instruction of online courses for both national and international students. In this role, she brokered and maintained several partnership agreements with four-year institutions, including Arizona State University, Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University and Wichita State University. The objective of these agreements was to create easier and additional pathways for students to enroll, transfer credits and succeed in completing their educational goals.

Anne Soon Choi interviews Dec. 12. Choi is professor and chair of interdisciplinary studies, a degree completion program for working adults and non-traditional students in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She developed the first online and hybrid courses in the college, and as the chair, she has increased retention and graduation rates and reduced time to degree for undergraduates in the department. She also created the first state-supported undergraduate online degree pathway at the university and established a series of undergraduate cohort degree options through partnerships with county agencies in Los Angeles. Additionally, she developed community partnerships with local community colleges and businesses to create student pipelines into the major. She also has been engaged in larger workforce development initiatives both on and off campus.

Choi is also the associate director of online learning and pedagogy in the Faculty Development Center at the university, overseeing faculty-targeted initiatives around online and hybrid instruction. These initiatives have included the design and implementation of self-paced, on-demand online training for faculty and students rooted in equity-minded pedagogy and the science of learning; faculty mentoring programs; and larger trainings focused on building online courses that center on equity and accessibility.
