Touted as being the first in 40 years, the review is said to focus on "skills people need when they leave school, but also later in life when they might be looking to improve their skills, change industries or build on general literacy and numeracy". Update from VET Review: Thoughts from the expert reviewer 1.2.19
The lead of the Independent Review into Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) sector has revealed some of his findings to date.
Mr Joyce said he was surprised by the lack of information on VET pathways being provided to school leavers.
Of his findings so far, Mr Joyce said confusion over funding was one of the most significant.
Mr Joyce spent January meeting with stakeholders Mr Joyce, said a bias towards university education in Australia did a disservice to students who could excel at vocational education.
“If VET was invented after higher ed, my view is that people would find it a really attractive alternative option,” he said.
“I mean, ‘Wow, that’s fantastic, you mean I don’t have to go to university for four years, and I don’t have to get a big loan, and I can earn money straight away?’ What a great new system that would be. I think that sort of in-built bias into the system means some people don’t do the jobs that they love, and some people don’t do the jobs that would make sense for them.”
Mr Joyce will continue his consultations in February. He will report to the Government in March.
