Ongoing and finished projects

A. Expanding Toolbox for Control of Tsetse in Kenya (2022-2027)

Role: PhD student

The project focuses on expanding the toolbox for control of tsetse fly, biting fly and ticks in eastern Africa with an overall goal of formulating novel eco-friendly olfactory-based attractants against selected savannah and riverine tsetse species and repellents against the savannah tsetse and brown ear tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus (Ra).

B.  Intensifying Camel Productivity through Integrated Control of Surra within the Somali ecosystem of the Horn of Africa (2018-2022)

Role: Project veterinarian

The project investigated spatial and temporal dynamics of camel surra, farmers practices, agro-veterinary outlets selling surra drugs among other aspects. The analysed data facilitated development of targeted Surra control packages for five communities rearing camels in Isiolo and Marsabit counties, namely Somali, Borana, Gabbra, Rendile and Turkana. Besides looking into the general camel husbandry practices across the five communities, the study investigated Surra prevalence in camel herds, as well as Surra vector density and temporal dynamics. The study also undertook drug sensitivity studies using T evansi isolates collected from camel herds and also evaluated the quality of drugs used by livestock keepers in management of Surra

3. Gender Inclusive Vaccine Ecosystem (The GIVE Project) (2019-2022)

Role: Lead alternate to one of the co-principal investigators. I was responsible for planning and overseeing the livestock vaccination component of the project

The goal of the project was to enhance the distribution and delivery systems for Newcastle Disease (ND) and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP) vaccines among smallholder farmers in South-Eastern Kenya, as well as increasing participation of women in different nodes of livestock vaccine value chain
