Born in France, Flotsam was the second child of the chief of an Axolotlan clan. His life was the height of luxury as far as Axie standards go. He was treated like royalty by his people and grew up with all the comforts and training an up and coming chief could expect. Initially, he was trained to prepare to inherit the throne in case his older brother could not fulfill his duty, and so Sam was not so heavily focused on it like his older sibling was. When he wasn’t going through survival training and studying tactics to guide his militia with his father or practicing herbalism with his mother, Sam would explore the world a bit and eventually came to develop a fascination with technology and machines. This love continued to grow as he got older, disrupted only when the war on Mythics came to their quiet little corner of France. Sam and his clan were pushed out and across Europe all the way to Russia, where they were forced to resettle. As it came to pass, his older sibling refused to follow the clan’s traditions and practices, seeing himself unfit to be a leader and wanting to pursue other things. His older sibling left in the night and Sam was told that he had abandoned them and that he was next in line.
Continuing his training, Sam and his clanmates were forced to go undercover and attend a local school to avoid raising suspicions as to what they really were. While they were hiding out, Sam met a fellow outcast in the school by the name of Yury, and although the boy was human, Sam came to fall in love with him rather quickly, feeling that Yury understood him and his situation and the two could really form a connection. Slipping the boy a note in his locker, Sam began meeting up with Yury at the local lake and the two quickly hit off, dating for quite a while and forming a very happy relationship. Yury supported his love of technology and dream of starting his own computer business and Sam showed him compassion and acceptance. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Sam, his family had arranged him to marry another Axie after making their peace with a neighboring clan. Sam transitioned his sex, as was common practice for Axolotlans to keep even numbers of males and females, but refused to go through with the wedding. His parents never got an answer as to why from him directly but sent someone to spy on him without him knowing and were livid when they found out it was because of a human. They moved farther away from human settlements, much to Sam’s dismay, but he still refused to budge. Similar to his older sibling, he left in the night, telling his sister he could not marry someone he didn’t love and begging her to promise not to tell their family where he went.
After Sam left home, he tried to find Yury but came to realize that the human world was great and treacherous in its expansiveness. He found himself lost in it all, and worse yet, he had no real way to contact Yury and meet with him. He found his old home empty and he was no longer attending school. Still, he kept on the straight and narrow and continued to search for his precious love while attempting to find work. During his search, Sam did his best to remain hopeful, but it was obvious he was very out of place among the crowds, and he was soon discovered for what he really was. While out walking one day, he was surrounded and viciously lynched by humans who cut his fins, tail, and one of his whiskers off in the process. The experience was severely traumatic of him and warped his perception of humans to be much more negative. The experience drove him to join the service and the war, where he hoped to put his technological prowess to good use. Instead, Sam was deployed to India as a spy and infantry unit. He proved to be an excellent marksman and joined a top of the line order of Mythics which would later go on to take the nation of India hostage, forcing the passage of the Acts. After retiring from the military, Sam found himself once again unemployed and wandering. His track record caught the eye of the Mythic Mafia (also known as the Uncaged Animals) and they offered him a job in their empire as an assassin and technician. Flotsam received advanced training which he quickly put to use alongside his military expertise and began carrying out assassinations and debt collections on behalf of the mafia. However, Sam still wasn’t satisfied.
After several years of working for them, Sam found himself unhappy and tried to leave his job but the mob would not let him go so easily. During his time with them, he’s honed his technological skills and began stealing from their supplies undetected. His plan is to slowly distance himself from the mafia over time and hopefully start his own business for himself, criminal or otherwise. During this time, he me a kindly minotaur by the name of Gustavo. After several late night stands with him, he let slip his situation. Gus was kind enough to offer him an out via the underground group that was also assisting him, known as Club Takamura. With the help of the sisters, Sam managed to slip away and has been living a life on the run ever since.
Snarky and cynical, Sam has little patience for things that won’t yield any benefit to him. He’s very much focused on his own goals and presents himself as having quite the ego. He’s far from friendly and would prefer to do things on his own as much as he can. This fierce sense of pride and constant desire to be independent has led to Sam having a rather testy and explosive temper, and it ultimately stems from his desperation to have some sort of feeling of control over what happens to him after going on for so long with a constant sense of unpredictable hardship. He doesn’t often picture his ideal life including others. On the odd occasion he does find himself working with them, Sam has been described as bossy, controlling, but still quite effective as a leader. He knows how to direct people to success and has never once left any person behind, making him as efficient collaboratively as he is independently (given that those working with him can handle his attitude). He’s very calculating and cautious, preferring to size up targets and ambush them with an immediate killing blow rather than engage in combat— an instinct from his primal fish brain reminding him that while Sam can tank quite a few hits and even lose a limb or two, he is not made for fighting. This sense of wariness follows him beyond his job as well however, as Sam finds himself incredibly defensive around humans due to his past experiences with them. He’s also rather paranoid about the mob finding out about his well-laid plans.
Beyond the scope of defensive emotions he often puts up to protect himself and his sense of freedom he feels is constantly being threatened at all times of the day, Flotsam is generally rather passive. He’s not the most expressive person but he does display a modicum of empathy which he often keeps tucked away. Though he tries to keep people at an arm’s length, Sam cannot resist the fact that he comes from a social species and that interpersonal connections are necessity for him- they will form whether he likes it or not. Spending a lot of time with people causes him to pack-bond with them, and though he may try to deny it, he cares deeply about those he comes to know and trust. Even with this sense of trust, Sam still finds it rather difficult to open up and talk about things that have happened to him, and he finds it much easier to simply square up and grow defensive. However, this front is simply a hollow way he feels is necessary to defend himself. In truth, Sam has a lot of regrets and carries a lot of sadness that he knows he needs to face and make his peace with, but keeps putting off with the excuse that he has more important things to focus on.

Flotsam’s species is capable of ingesting toxic material (ranging from overly processed foods to straight up toxic waste), their bodies are capable of sifting out toxic particles and using other absorbed chemicals to neutralize them, or at least suppress them and store the toxins in one chamber of their throat pouches to be released as repellant spray and mist. The more they ingest, the bigger their collar will puff up. However, even they have their limits. Once they reach a certain amount of toxicity, it can no longer be contained by their pouches and starts circulating their bodies instead. It may take days to notice since they regenerate so quickly, but after a while, they’ll begin to feel sick and start wretching. They can fix this by simply barfing up the chemicals and replenishing themselves well with water. The family varies in their tolerance however.
Sam’s story of “escaping the Uncaged Animals” is well-known among Mythic communities. Most everyone knows his story as it was reported in the news years back and was seen by Mythics everywhere. He’s known as the “dead fish walking” and “the man who escaped the Uncaged cage”.
