Apartment 104d

(Ketil Espenæs)
Let me tell you a story
Once upon a time there was a girl…
She had seen the horror of the human world
And one day she couldn't stop staring
The eyes had sunk so deep in her head
They were so distant, so remote
Her black hair draped the pillow
Her hands clutched around the sheets
A face so pale, so frightened
But still, it showed a sign of relief
An innocent girl
Born into a darkened world
Left to die in solitude
Reborn through her death
So there she was, looking at the ceiling
The curtains made a flickering light
All the needles on the nightstand
The bruises on her shoulders, reflecting it all
I still have nightmares of that room
It was in the year of ’78, I entered
I saw the pale body of a figure so sad
And all the blood, all the suffering
And all the wrinkles on her hands
For the times her father beat her…
For the times her mother rejected her…
For the times her customers misused her…
She would have wanted it like this (I think)
I buried her in the old church yard
Her grave is filled with spring flowers
A divine way of asking for forgiveness
An innocent girl
Born into a darkened world
Left to die in solitude
Reborn through her death
