The Young Authors Fair & and Family Literacy Celebration is sponsored by the Ventura County Reading Association (VCRA). The Young Authors Fair (YAF) is a free event that publicly honors and salutes the literary creativity of young authors and those who encourage students to make their own books.

BOOKS CREATED BY STUDENTS
The YAF provides an opportunity for teachers and others working in education in Ventura County to support their students’ creative skills by providing time and encouragement for students to write and/or illustrate individual or group-produced books.
HOW IT WORKS: THE DAY OF THE YOUNG AUTHORS FAIR
The event is traditionally held on a Saturday morning in the spring at a site in Ventura County.
On the day of the YAF, a designated teacher/adult brings their student(s)’ books and makes a small public display of them.
Throughout the morning, participants explore the book displays from students county-wide, and are invited to participate in fun literacy activities.
The YAF is free and open to the whole community to attend on that day. The young authors /illustrators and their families are especially encouraged to attend.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
PreK-12 students in public schools, charter schools, private schools, and homeschools in Ventura County are eligible to register and participate.
One teacher/adult must register for the YAF in advance to enter their class, small group, or individual student.
SPECIAL APPEARANCE OF A PUBLISHED CHILDREN’S AUTHOR
VCRA invites a published children’s author to be a special guest at the YAF. The Author interacts throughout the morning, exploring students’ books and talking with individual young authors. At the end of the morning, the Author does a brief presentation to everyone in attendance.
GIFTS for YAF PARTICIPANTS
Every child (1 book per family) attending the event receives an autographed copy of the Author's book.
Every student receives a gold sticker for their book, marking their participation.
Those who join VCRA on the day of the YAF event receive an additional children’s book from the VCRA collection.
